NJB3 questions - size, file formats
« on: April 30, 2004, 09:46:16 AM »
This forum looks to be a godsend for a clueless newbie like myself. I'm slowly learning the most basic basics... I had been considering buying a simple MD recorder to embark on taping, but this JB3 thing looks a lot more interesting.

One thing I'm not quite sure about: how bulky is all this when you've got everything you need to start recording? My particular interest is jazz, so I hope to be recording in cramped urban jazz clubs, not Madison Square Garden or football stadiums. Ideally I'll want something that I can stealthily keep on my lap or inside a coat, and I hope I'll be able to use a small microphone that the club owner won't spot as he passes by my table. Will the JB3 be appropriate for this kind of situation?

Thanks for any information or tips!

EDIT: I have another, even more embarassingly clueless question: when you record onto a JB3, what format is the recorded file?

Depends on what gear you get.  NJB3 + small battery box + a pair of AT853s or some such will be very small.  The NJB3 is the size of a personal, portable CD player.

Will the JB3 be appropriate for this kind of situation?

I think so.

I can't believe I left this out of the FAQ (though it is on Creative's product page).  The NJB3 records in various qualities of MP3 and WAV 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 48kHz.

Thanks, Brian. But I'm stunned: I went looking for the JB3 to check prices and discovered that it is no longer manufactured! And where I am, in Europe, they just aren't selling them anymore. I even called up Creative, and the man I spoke to said they don't have any equivalent products for recording.

I hesitate to buy a used one, so I guess I'll go research minidisc recorders...  :-[

Check EBay, I believe Creative is still selling refurbed units for USD 180.  I have 2 refurbs and no problems with either.  And I wouldn't hesitate to buy used, personally, but that's your personal decision.

saint-martin, the jb3's are out of stock, not out of production.  get one when you can, you won't be disapointed.

Kids!!! Need quick help!!!

Do all JB3 recorders come with digital-in capability? There I am looking to buy one, but the opportunity is brief, and it doesn't say for sure. It is an upgraded 20GB (originally a 6 GB).

Little help??

Thanks,
jim

6GB?  I'm guessing that's a plain old Jukebox as that unit comes stock with 6GB drive.  In which case the answer is NO, it cannot record digital-in.  The Jukebox 3 is the only Nomad recorder which supports reliable digital-in recording, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks, B!  Just saved me $130.

Can i get a JB3 anywhere? None available on the Creative Labs, and haven't found any on ebay.

******FORGET IT********
Not too hard to find one on ebay if you use "Jukebox" instead of "jb3"

anywhere else?

Thanks....

They sell new-in-box as well as referbed units at ebay.  I just got mine, buy it now price $289; I also picked up the extra battery at $49.  Probably could have saved a few dollars by bidding but last Friday the new one went for $260 so... an additional $30 to skip the stress aint bad.

Now I cant wait to get it.  3-5 bus days ???

Hee hee... i just got mine, too! I'm so freakin excited i want to burn all my DATs (about 12) in celebration!!!!!!

One thing,  I have a pair of MBHO 603a mics, but the pre and a/d are really bulky. Anyone stealth-tape with small, no-pre or small-pre mics?

What do you use?

Thanks,
Jim

PS  Where is the link to the actual FAQ???? Can t search on it.

Need to add to the FAQ that when locked you can turn the light on by tapping the power button twice...
