Other TL Users... A Little Advice Needed
« on: May 01, 2004, 11:55:30 AM »
I have been lucky enough to use my TLs 19 times over the past 3 months... Hell of alot of transfering and tracking...
I have tried vert XY, hort. XY, DIN and just aiming at the stacks, just for fun.
I really enjoy the feeling of being there that these mics have, most of the time..
My issue is: I am often able to get  DFC way up close for my friends' band and the bass/kick drum always comes off overpowering everything else, even when the PA mix is even.
I am wondering what config will cut out some bass for close up recordings..
Also, I'm wondering if that close I'm picking up the bass amp and the actual kick drum....

any help/ advice would be grand....
Tim

This is a guess, not being there, but I would think that if you are too close, you are really getting the stage amps mainly, as opposed to the PA.   You might want to back up a bit... if you can set up really anywhere you want, I would suggest envisioning an equilateral triangle between the stax and your stand.

I used to run XY almost exclusively, but lately I have been running DIN and liking the results more than XY.  I will prolly continue using DIN unless I am in a very boomy venue.

The best thing to do is try different things.

There are a couple other threads discussing configs with LD mics right now:

I think your question is relevant to all tapers, not only TL users!  ;)

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

running XY hypers will really cut down that bass a lot.  Don't be afraid to move farther back, either

If it your friends band ask them if you can set up early and record the sound check,  if they say OK (which I'm sure they will) set up all your stuff without duct-taping your stand to the floor,   record a few mins from where you usually set up,  than move back a little and record a few more mins,  and so on,   than give the tape a good listen and see where you get the best results,  and tape from there.

I will have to keep that in mind the closer I tape. Only used my TL's once, but the bass was plenty phat and I wasn't super duper close. I would imagine with those LD diaphrams that over loading the mic with bass would be easy, XY with hypers would work to cut down, or maybe some of the fiters on the V3 would work for me.

And isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, ooh ooh ooh, the sky is the limit!
