ua-5 and scms, wtf??
« on: May 12, 2004, 11:25:50 PM »
this a pretty straightforward question, and please save the ua-5 isnt bit perfect thing, its a dual purpose recording and transfering tool for me as i dont have the scratch to pick up something better.
to the question.  Mic D sent me an sts9 tape to transfer for him, he taped it on a D8 with a sony dds 90m, i put it in my D100 sending it through the digi in on the ua-5 to my lappy and get the blinking light telling me it wont let me transfer it due to scms.  what can i do to get it on the comp with the ua-5 without getting kevin's deck to transfer it with, any ideas, or am i screwd and cant transfer this digitally to my computer???
-this is my first experience with a scms warning and its really pissing me off and wishing i had just gotten a m1 instead, any good cheap external soundcards out there that are cheap and strip scms, as i dont want to go through this again, thanks for you help guys

after the initial bugs when first transfering using a UA-5, i've had no problems other than plugging the in to the out and having no signal passing through.  Stupid mistakes like that happen to everyone, but i've never had a problem with SCMS, heard and read a little bit about it, but never experienced it.

If all else fails run an analog into your computer from your dat, the SCMS probably only protects it going over a digital signal.  hope you get it figured out.

is the tape the master or a 1st clone?

scms allows you to make 1 digital clone of a master (unless the master is set to ID 01), then no more digital clones are allowed.

>>this is my first experience with a scms warning and its really pissing me off and wishing i had just gotten a m1 instead

i *think*, you'd have the same problem with the M1.  M1 will still send the scms flag out digitally.  i don't think a pro-deck strips the code, but merely ignores it when it receives the digital signal.

for example, i have 2 prodecks at home for cloning. when i read a tape's ID and notice that it's "01" (meaning "no digital clones permitted"), my recorder will still digtially record even though the incoming digital signal contains scms flag.

>>any good cheap external soundcards out there that are cheap and strip scms, as i dont want to go through this again, thanks for you help guys.

i've been using dio 2496, and it's very easy to use.  dio2448 used is about $35 on ebay from time to time.  i'm sure other older cards made by egosys, etc. are pretty cheap on the auction block.

hope this helps,
marc

can someone point me to the evidence that the ua-5 is not bit perfect. i think i read a post a while back that edirol was stating this...but i cant seem to find anything to support this.

leegedy, i know its a clone, not sure if its a first generation or 2nd, ill have to get back to you on that, im looking for a reason to upgrade my transfer lineage anyway, just need to find a good solution that is capable of 24/96 in the future

chris;

try transfering one of your masters via the same setup. your setup should pass signal to your hdd.  since scms isn't ignored by the ua-5, you can't pass the clone's signal.

i gotta get me one of those ua-5's to play around with.

side note, i will be happy to transfer and seed for a torrent, the sts9 tape.  i have a r500 and a newly purchased Behringer SRC2000 which would strip any SCMS along with re-sampling.  pm me if you need it done, plus, i have a bit perfect soundcard so the seed would improve too.  thanks
