Marantz PMD620 internal mics

Had to resort to these the other night and couldn't really adjust the gain. Levels were way hot and when I tried to decrease the gain it got to -29db and stopped. From that point if I tried to go further it would mute. What gives?

Was the preset for internals set to adjustable gain or auto? That sounds like the problem.
