Recording in 'mono' mode on MD
« on: May 28, 2004, 05:33:10 PM »
so i read up on the manuals for my MS722 deck, and what i found was that recording in mono gave you twice the amount of recording time on a minidisc. so my question is, is there any downside from recording in mono?
- The isolation of science from feeling, emotion, purpose, singular events, and historic identity, endeared it to more limited minds. But it is not, perhaps, an accident that most of the great spirits in science, from Kepler and Newton to Faraday and Einstein, kept alive in their thought the presence of God - not as a mode of explaining events, but as a reminder of why they're ultimately as unexplainable today as they were in their time.

if you use a stereo mic or a stereo pair of mics it will not matter.  One channel will be duplicated to both

It just sounds.... off.  Don't do it. I can't listen to a tape if its in mono, too painful.

But recording in mono would be good if you got a SBD patch that was mono right?

Sure, it wouldn't matter then, but I thought he was talking about with a pair of mics...  I know a guy who only tapes in Mono, and its hideous.

For sure I know you wouldn't want to record in mono with mics.

I just wanted to throw in my assumtion that mono mode wouldn't make a difference if the board patch is mono.

If you are planning on only taping in mono, then only use one microphone. If you use two, you run the risk of introducing phasing into your recording, and once it's in mono, you're stuck with it, no chance to save it.

I would suggest taping it in stereo, NON-LP!! I don't think the 722 is MDLP compatible, but as it is, you're losing quality with ATRAC sampling. Just put a title on each of the discs you are going to record on, and just get good at the tape flip. It's worth it in the end.

And even if you are "stack taping", it is nice to have the audience in stereo.

Bullshit. Listen to Greg's Tool or APC, dunebug81 or something he goes by.  His sound like COMPLETE ass, compare it to some of my stack tapes or Smagma's. I believe I might even be able to find you a direct comparison of his Tallahassee vs Mine.   CSB's>Sharp MD.  Both of us right next to each other, his in Mono.  I don't care if you guys don't like stack tapes, but there IS a sound difference stereo vs mono.

he only taped one of those in mono.  I know because I have the misfortune of owning the masters.  And my statement was more of a jab at only recording half the concert ;)

zing!

...c'mon, play nice ;)

Mono lacks a certain depth, tis true, but sometimes it is unavoidable (one or two of mine have a completely fucked channel so i gots to use nothin but the good one)

That being said, it's definately prefferable to know the set structure going into a show, and doin a tape flip - just dont be too drunk or too sober, you'll get edgy and botch it ;)
