what to do with portico 5012

hey now,

so  i picked up a like-new portico 5012 in trade awhile back.  still have not used it outside of testing because i haven't found an efficient way to incorporate it into an easily portable rig.

before i mutilate it by cutting off the rack ears.....i have all i need to power it in a bag, but nothing that makes sense to transport it in.  i have been super slack on selling it, as i'd love to use it, but don't really have a local club or anything where i can roll in with a mini-rack...

If you have an interface with multiple ins/outs you could run your recordings through it at home. Lots of tutorials on YouTube for setting up outboard gear to your DAW if you need it. Feed it at -18 dbfs, turn on the silk circuit and add some of that gooey transformer goodness to your recordings. It's like a plugin but with the real thing. If not, would probably be an easy sale on ebay, Reverb, gearspace etc.

I've never owned one of these but a friend did and I ran it a couple of times. It made the ADK TLs I was running at the time sound like a mic in a different league. True that it's clumsy for bag use but it's doable. You don't have to cut the ears off - and you might not want to if you plan on reselling it eventually - it fits in a Lowepro Magnum 200 with the ears on.

Currently going over things in my head to figure out how to come up with the scratch to buy this off you. It would be a perfect go-to preamp for my home studio.

looking into the lowepro bag. i bought it to run with my u89's. may give it a break-in at msg phish. but still cor sale unless i comit and buy that lowepro in time to try prior to msg....

I have a mint Nova 4 it fits in with plenty of room to spare for 89's and anything else you might need to throw in there. I haven't used it in years. I owe you more than just a bag but hit me up, I'll ship it to ya.

that's a killer idea, especially if i recorded at home.  however, my current playback system tickles my fancy, and the better tapes wouldn't really benefit (hooked it up when i first bought it to try) - i spent close to 15 years as a second engineer in a studio - this piece ought to be in an input chain in a studio (it'd be tits as a home studio input)

I think you can buy a face plate that doesn't have the rack ears or at least they sold them at one point.  You might want to contact Rupert Neve and see.
