Looking for DAT repair options
« on: December 04, 2023, 10:03:16 AM »
My friend with the Sony D7 is ready to send his Sony DAT deck (not the D7) off for repair, looking for reliable facilities that can handle it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Audio Designs, in North Hollywood.  Its $100 to open it up plus the repair, and the $100 is applied to the repair.  Parts will be an issue.  He might have to buy another D7 for parts or use his machine to refurbish another D7 that he purchases.   There is D7 for parts on eBay right now for $68.  I like to "watch" the listing for a week or so, and hope for a discount offer, which happens frequently on slow moving stuff.

He can good a good deal on a Tascam DA-20 which is working on eBay right now for about $300.

My opinion is that repairing a D7 is putting a $100 saddle on a $10 horse.  Of course, if it has sentimental value, then the machine is priceless.

If you had bothered to completely read my post above (not the P.M. I sent you) you would see that he wants his deck repaired NOT THE D7. But thanks anyway.

Misread the post, sorry.

Sony R500s are decent machines if he has that one, but much below that will not be up to the task of reproducing hundreds of DATs, and the R500 was common, so parts are still out there.

The Sony 7030 were amazing machines, and I had two, but sadly, they are rare to locate (they were nearly $8,000 in the day), and consequently parts are not available.  I shopped eBay for over a year for parts before tossing it in the recycling bin at my local electronics electronic recycling center.

i recommend buying a used fostex 5d. they are simple machines. have xlr dgi i/o. bullet proof until the head drum gives out. easy to clean the head drum, take off the cover, put some iso alcohol on a tech wipe and spin. i recommend transferring all your dats asap to digital, because once the tapes have issues, you cant fix the problem.

What is a dgi output?

Most of the high end DATs I've owned have a SPDIF output.

You know more than I do, unless I know the output, just not the term.
