Getting a Tapers rig started!
« on: June 13, 2004, 06:12:01 PM »
I am a total taping NOOBIE!! Who is very interested in getting a recording rig together but I have not alot of money to do it with! what all do I need to capture concerts so that they sound decent enough to listen too and trade? What Are some Moderatly priced portable DAT recorders? What Are some good Midrange Mics? How does it all come together? I Live In Salt LAke City, Utah and I spent all day yesterday looking for a sound store that sold portable DAT recorders(I went in to best buy and I can't describe the look the guy got on his face when I asked him if they had DAT recorders)
Are there any tapers Local to my area that might be willing to show me the ropes and help the noobie on his way?

Your thoughts and feedback is greatly appreciated!

Welcome, glad to have you.

we're going to need a budget with some actual dollar numbers.

until then the Nomad JB3 seems to be the hottest thing in portable recorders with DAT quality...

also, related to the mics question, what type of music? stealth or open? theatres? bars? arena's?

give us some more specifics on what you want to do and how much you want to spend and the recommendations will come!

methinks that if you read through just this forum youd find a TON of information.  begin by reading the FAQs.

This is not for any stealth recording I plan to only tape shows that permit audience taping?

poke around the sight some, the FAQ's are great...

I'm guessing something like Okatava->W MOD UA-5->JB3

also, there are some tapers from the SLC area that frequent this board and are quite knowledgeable and nice guys taboot. I doubt you'll have much trouble finding some good local help!

How about this?

Superlux > warm mod ua-5 > NJB3

$169          $500                 $169

That would bring you in under $1000...

stretch a little more from your $1k limit and go with adk tl's.... great rig for pretty reasonable.

Don't forget to figure in the accesories you will need.

Cables
Mic stand
t-bar
shock mounts
batteries for pre/ad

Could easily run you $200+

Hey man I live around Salt Lake.

My advice to you is to pick up your rig thorugh the yard sale, there's some good stuff up there now.

Eric Mcfadden is playing at Ego's, PM me if you want to meet up.

Skip the Octavas and go Studio Projects C4 > Warm Mod UA-5 > JB3.  That should leave you a couple hundred for stuff like the stand, cables, etc...
