In general, I tend to agree. Simply putting different recordings together doesn't inherently make it sound better. Like I've seen people recording 8 channels with 4 different sets of mics and then just mash them all together in post. I don't get the point of that unless the mics somehow compliment each other...say in either frequency response, config or pickup pattern.
I do think it's an over-generalization though to say it won't work, or it's not worth trying, since it's not always obvious what you'll get when you put two sources together.
One probably obvious example that comes to mind...in my experience almost any audience source will improve the sound of a sterile SBD recording when well synched.
