Comp: Scheops CMC622 vs. KM184 on acoustic guitars
« on: September 19, 2025, 06:59:02 PM »
I recently acquired a guitar that was similar in shape and tone woods to another I own and I was wondering whether the difference in the guitar, or choice of microphone, would make the greater difference. The guitars are both OM shaped and have rosewood back and sides and spruce tops. I would prefer not to name the guitars or provide additional details on their differences as I don't want to bias the listening.

To test this out I recorded 6 samples (30-60s snippets of songs) on each of the two guitars. Each sample I recorded on each guitar was used to create a two channel mix of one pair of microphones (with the neck mic panned right as if facing the guitar) Please forgive the playing, I'm not an expert player, but I think it's more than sufficient for the purposes of this exercise. Some of the samples are in dropped D and some have more picking than strumming to give a sense of the way each guitar/mic handles that style. For all recordings I had two microphones set up in stereo (one of each type) ~8" off the lower bout and one of each type ~8" off where the body meets the neck. See picture for clarity.

I have all of the samples up on samply and you can download them or stream them but, if you stream them, you may want to go to audio settings and select lossless.

If you decide to give a listen and have a preference on a particular guitar, mic or combination, I would welcome your feedback.

Shout out to Unclehoolio, as always, as the inspiration for blind comps.

Edit: ~1PM EDT - I realized last night that I had left the metadata, with the mics and guitars named, in the files. At that time I turned off download for the files as you couldn't see the meta data in the online player. I just updated the meta data, reuploaded all the files and enabled downloads again. If you downloaded the files yesterday, my apologies, this won't be a blind comp.  ::)
