DPA UA0896 foams on KM140 for stealth outdoor work?
« on: February 05, 2026, 03:57:06 PM »
Thinking of using DPA UA0896 Foam Windscreen on my Neumann KM140 pair for low-profile outdoor/stealth recording.
https://www.dpamicrophones.com/accessories/windscreens/ua0896?variant=182

Will these foams actually tame light wind movement, or am I wasting time?

Also, any fit issues on KM140 bodies?

Thanks!

Your km140's are 22mm wide and the windscreens 19mm wide, so there could be some slight compression of the foam which could have an audible impact.  I used them with Schoeps cmc6/mk4 (20mm) and didn't notice any problem with the fit.  I would only use those indoors with very light air movement.  I retired them from outdoor use after a few bad results.

For stealth? They are kinda large to fit into a hat and not leave obvious lumps.
There are some Schoeps screens (if I recall) which are lower profile, and which might not work as well in high wind, but are less obvious.
If you are sneaking with a stand, the DPA should be fine.

They fit perfectly (if snugly), they are good up to about 15 knots (I am guessing). At 20 knots or more wind speed they are not perfect but they still help a lot.

With any windscreen, a guiding principle is to push it all the way on, then pull it back a ways, like 5-10 mm, so there is a pocket of still air in front of the diaphragm.

The reason I stopped using those DPA screens is that they turn to goo after a long time.
They left a black sticky substance in my mic carrying case after about ten years.
Check the texture from time to time, once they lose their sponginess, and start to get sticky, I'd recommend discarding & replacing them.

I rarely run low profile outdoors, and so I use Movo screens now, though I heard the model I use is discontinued?

In normal use up on a stand, that DPA foam will tame light air movement but not wind.. at least in my experience.

A Movo WST of the appropriate length or Shure A81WS are the reasonably priced / sized / effective outdoor windscreens I've had the best experiences with. Both are larger than that DPA foam screen though. Movo WST30 is (was?) the shortest I think, appropriate for remote capsule mics. A WST50 is probably an appropriate length for KM140. Both Shure and Movo are about the same diameter, the classic Shure A81WS about the same length as Move WST100.  With either, make sure the elastic foam or rubber cuff seals tightly around the microphone body. Any leaks provide an easy path in for wind noise.

"Low-profile outdoor/stealth" implies the mics will be down around head height where there tends to be somewhat less wind, so you might be able to get away with less wind protection than when recording openly and running mics high on a stand. But wind-noise on recordings sucks, so go big and more effective if you can, especially if you expect wind.  Dunno about worn in a hat, where smaller foam may be effective under the hat fabric.
