TASCAM DR-40XP 4-Channel 32 Bit Float
« on: April 08, 2026, 02:57:32 PM »
The DR-40XP is your go-to 4-track field recorder – built for musicians, videographers and anyone who wants to capture brilliant audio on the move with total reliability. It combines adjustable stereo microphones with low-noise HDDA mic preamps, plus XLR/TRS inputs with phantom power, so you’re ready for almost any recording setup.

With 32-bit float recording at sampling rates up to 96 kHz, you get clean, distortion-free audio even in challenging environments. Add in long battery life and a USB-C audio interface option, and it’s a solid choice for both recording in the field and working in the studio.

Tascam do not seem to be claiming dual ADCs for this device.  Other than that, it seems to have some interesting features and the self noise is respectable at -126dBA.

Note that this unit uses the same HDDA preamps found on their cheaper units going back the DR-60D and DR-70D, not their best Ultra HDDA preamps you find in the FR-AV2, FR-AV4, and their more expensive mixers, interfaces, and field recorders.

FWIW, the portacapture units use the same HDDA preamps:

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

Without dual ADC, the next interesting question would be if gain control is working in the analog domain or if it's fixed analog gain + post-ADC digital gain, as we see in many 32bfp recorders these days...
