Due I have to do an export and save that file or can I just backup the .pst file itself?

backing up should be exporting your personal information in a pst file. it won't back itself up, unless you prompt for it to.

exchange mode - you have to do an export, unless you have it set to save everything in your pst file already
pop3 mode - just copy the PST file
