So i taped Primus onto my Nomad and M1
« on: June 23, 2004, 06:16:01 PM »
The dat sounds spectacular fwiw, probably my best tape yet, the nomad on the other hand has absolutely no bass whatsoever to the recording, it sounds crystal clear but no bass, nada, nothing.  I assume i can fix this problem a bit in audition?  Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I'm listening to my dat transfer and man, this shit is fucking sweet.   :D

Oh, the show kicked ass, i was very impressed with the band, much more so than when i caught them last fall at the Roseland.  The band doesn't seem to have their PA cranked to 10 though, i used some ety earplugs (which offer maybe 20db of protection at most) and it sounded fine, but could've been louder.  The crowd was rowdy but not too bad, some chatter boxes sat next to me and my brother offered to switch so their chit chat didnt come out on the tape, two cheers to my brother   ;D ;D

Anyone interested in obtaining a copy?  Let me know, thanks!

Yes, i had the gain set to +6.

I used my MV100 preamp, had the nomad plugged in via the rca outs (ratshack rca>miniplug) and the M1 plugged in via the line out with a straightwire mini cable.  The LF cut was OFF.

Optical in on the JB3 vs. Line in makes a HUGE difference, in my experience.

I imagine it does, but would running line in on the nomad cause such a bass difficiency?

well, honestly....I don't know. Once you start messing with the gain on your "line in" setting, things can get a bit wacky. Best to just let your pre handle the signal and go from there. I do know that two recordings I made in two consecutive tapings, one optical in and one line in were pretty different...the line in recording is remarkably brighter, and not as full.

EDIT: Oh, and lest you think I'm smart enough to try two different settings in the field on purpose, my line in recording had more to do with Foster's Oil cans than it did scientific study. ;D

you have to split one of the line outs.  You can't take 2 different outputs because the voltages may be different IE: +4dBu and -10dBV

True, Schwill, but that shouldn't impact the presence or lack of bass on the NJB3 recording, only the relative recording levels.

Something was wrong, there shouldn't be THAT much of a difference between the D100/M1 and the NJB3 - at least there wasn't in my direct comparison running in a controlled, field-simulated environment.  Was the mini connector fully and properly seated in the NJB3's mini jack?  Wondering if the NJB3 recording is whacked because of the problem some people experience seating the mini connection.

Brian, wouldn't that have resulted in a more distorted recording? All of the mini problems I'm heard of have involved drop outs and noise, not fidelity loss...

that will do it,  I had this happen on a DAT tape when the connector wasn't fully plugged in.  The JB3 can have this problem because the Line-in Jack is janky

Nope, the cable was snug as a bug, its a very tight miniplug so it stayed put, plus i had all the gear in a bag and the nomad sat snug in its own  compartment.  Besides trying to figure out what went wrong: Can software "fix" the bass problem?

The line out cable for my dat actually got loose on the preamp side for a few seconds with my dat and noticed the right channel go out and i seated the cable immediately.  The ratshack cable i used for my nomad is actually quite thick and heavy in comparison to the scrawny straightwire cable i used for my nomad.

Also, i did have my EAX setting turned on, but i imagine when you run line it any treble/bass enhancements are disengaged, correct?

I'm thinking the same thing...time to do some testing this weekend and see what the deal is.  However, i am still going under the assumption that EAX is disengaged when you run line in...well....i recall running line out on the nomad in the past and the EAX stayed on which isn't a good sign  :'(

Definitely worth looking into.  Not sure if EAX only affects output or also input.  Try a test at home: turn off EAX and record something, turn it back on and see if it sounds different.
