Nomad JB3

Just got mine in, and the guy i got it from on ebay did not send the manuel.
Any tips, better to run line in or optical?

Obviously optical.  Sorry, that was a little condesending!  Optical would give you a digital signal, while line in would mean that you have to go through the jb3 a/d, which I am sure is crap!  If you have an a/d, which if memory serves me correctly you do, then you should most certainly use it.  Digital signals are not subject to the inner circuitry of the jb3, while feeding an analog signal, whether it be line or mic, certainly is.  I have heard the a/df is kind of like a d7/8, also known as not that good!

Another stupid question i am sure. But can run both the Nomad (optical) and the d-8 (mini) at the same time out of my ad-20?

HMM, what kind of outs does the ad-20 have?  If it has both coax and optical, then yes.  Otherwise, if it is just coax, a splitter should do the track.  I plan on running mine with a splitter out of the mini-me like so:

split->nomad, split->m1.

Let me know and I will help you some more.  And no, you are not a retard, just a person desiring to learn more!

You can print the nomad manual from the cd...It has no manual.
It's only 137 pages long, so bee sure ou have plenty of paper.

According to his posts, it seems all of his recordings were made using something between his A>D and his JB3 like a co2 or other converter.  To really lay blame entirely on the JB3 due to that is a little questionable. Everyone I talk to who goes straight optical out of their A>D has not really had any problems.

Oh well. I'll keep using mine til it does something wrong.

Agreed.  That's part of the reason I'm not over on the Oade forum as much.  Everytime I'd try to post something positive about the JB3, I'd get slammed (albeit not personally) about using one.  I totally understand his motives for not wanting it to be considered a DAT replacement, but enough is enough.  I don't feel I misrepresented the JB3's capabilities one bit.  But maybe that "bit" got dropped (nyuk, nyuk).  In addition, I constantly got flak for running high-end mics into that recorder.  Apparently, this showed that I didn't know what I was talking about re: taping in general.

Sorry for the rant.

The only problems I've had with the JB3 have been when running it through a converter, or when messing with the power supply (i.e. trying to run it off a 6v SLA).  When you use it as it was intended, that is to say, taking an "original" optical signal and running off of internal batteries, it performs flawlessly.

Again, don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

Oh well. I'll keep using mine til it does something wrong.

I ran mine for the first time last nightat KDTU in Tuscaloosa. I turned it on when i was setting up about an hour and half before the show and the first set was about 1:47. Recorded flawlessly, but after a thirty min set break the battery died about 10 mins into the second set. Thank god it was only a back up. And i do have another battery one the way. But i was hoping for at least three hours of record time of the one battery, o well.

I turn mine off between sets and dont turn it on till right before showtime.
