Soundcard Recommendations

Hi,

     I hope to have my first rig up and running by the end of this year - I will definitely be converting any successful efforts I have to FLAC for trading purposes, I will make audio discs available too if I record anything worth listening to a second time - What soundcards are out there that will enable me to do the highest quality conversions to my pc?  Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions/recommendations!

get a DDS drive and bypass the need for a digital input card!   :-*

do you have firewire?
the Audiophile 2496 is a good, relatively cheap($125-150) PCI card that is bit perfect.

I use the Zoltrix Nightingale.  Others use the Audiophile 2496 or the Zefiro ZA2.  

The Soundblaster cards and some of the Montego cards do unnecessary resampling, and are NOT recommended...

Any DDS drive that you would recommend in particular? - I have a desktop pc with usb2.0 ports - thanks for all the recommendations thus far - I love this site!!

i would avoid the DDS route.  tons of errors, i cant ever remember one working totally correctly even most of the time

Note that the ZA2 soundcard which twatts mentioned fits is an ISA card.  Most modern computers do not include ISA slots since it is an outdated technology.  Fortunately for me I have easy access to scavenge old computer parts and built a machine for free specifically for transfers with a ZA2.

I know the Zoltrix Nightengale was popular there for a while and quite inexpensive - not sure how much they go for these days...

I use an Echo Mia (non-MIDI version) and have had no problems thus far.  Although it's essentially the same as the Audiophile, YMMV
