Maiden Voyage!
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:45:42 PM »
Thanks to all of you who have helped me out with any of my questions and thanks to all of you who don't even know you helped me.  Tomorrow night is the first night out with the "new rig"!!  New and First rig!

If anyone is going to be at the 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis for the Hang Ups w/Sideways and Jimmy's Comet show tomorrow (Friday 13th) come say hi...i'm there to tape Jimmy's Comet...but hopefully the other bands will be cool with it too...

I've been testing the rig for 2 weeks....its go time baby!

Soooo my first rig looks like this....

MXL 603s > Edirol UA-5 > Nomad Jukebox 3

the UA-5 is stock which means i'm going analog in to the JB3
Mic Cables: 15' Canare Star Quad Cables w/Neutrik gold Connectors
Pre-amp to recorder interconnect: Monster THX RCA->Stereo Mini
Stand: Impact 13' stand with a home made mic T-bar and the mics in MXL shock mounts.

Is there a GHETTO club i can get into...cause i'm pretty sure my T-bar qualifies for ghetto status..
I'll have pics up some time this weekend

I like it for my first rig...but i'm already resarching upgrades...UA-5 Digimod for sure.....then mics

Thanks again for all y'alls help!!

Look around for the digimod instructions, think they are in the archival section of this board.  You should be able to do it yourself without much of a headache..the UA5 has a better A/D (although I've used the analog in on the JB3 and haven't been terribly disappointed with it).
Good luck!!!

First time out...always a fun time, enjoy it, it only happens once
It is company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo - We have to use the indefinite article; "A" dildo, never: "YOUR" dildo.

And isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, ooh ooh ooh, the sky is the limit!

oh i'd be all about the digimod DIY....but the UA-5 is my friends...and he isn't using it for recording...so he doesn't want the mod done....soooo i'll probably just buy one with it done already....unless i find a UA-5 for a sweet price...then DIY

and thanks for the luck!!

well after barely finding 1st ave....i snuck in about 10 minutes before Jimmys Comet hit the stage....soooo how is that for first night out pressure....i just set up FOB which is about 30 ft from the stage and about 20ft from the PAs which are hung on the ceiling above the stage...In the dark none the less...which i didn't practice before i went out for the first time...

I set my levels on the UA-5 around 12 o' clock....just a guess....and i was actually pretty close...just needed to turn down a little bit during the second song which was a much louder song than the first....

the Comet finished their set and i pulled everything down....never figured on how protective i was going to be about my equipment....went to the car...plugged in headphones to the JB3 to make sure i had some music...all was good...and it sounded ok to....

got home and transferred to the computer....played it through the home stereo and wow....it actually sounded good....i am very very happy with my first recording....i'll post an mp3 later tonight......and y'all can give me some feedback....

questions i would have:...at 1st Ave the ceiling is extremely low...my mics were approx. 1.5' from the ceiling......but the PAs are hung on the ceiling approx. the same distance my mics were at.......i ran the mics XY.....the only thing i'm hearing right now that could be improved are the vocals...they don't seem to be right there...more split to the left and right channel and not in the center...any thoughts on that??...

anyway...can't wait to do more taping.....thanks again to all of you for your help!!
