I Got The Power !!!
« on: August 14, 2004, 11:13:55 PM »
I am hittin up the 9-11 free show at Golden Gate Park and have a UA5 w/ ratshack cable w/ (2) male R/C connecters and a 1000ma and 1600ma to power only my UA5. I figure I can get 5 3/4 hours (2600/450=5.78) and my NJB3 has two internal batteries that are suppose to record for six hours. The show is goin' on 11am to 5pm so about six hours total and I would imagine the music is only 2/3(four hours) or mabey five (not sure so please give me feedback if you know) of the six hours of the show. I was thinkin' of mabey purchasin' a Wallmart 9.6@5400ma to run both my NJB3 and my UA5. I figure I can get a total of six hours of power (450(UA5)+450(NJB3)=900, 5400/900=6) runnin' both and my UA5 has a ratshack cable w/ 2male r/c so I was thinkin' about makin' a cable for my NJB3. The cable would go like this: Walmart battery cable>(2) r/c female connecters>r/c male connecter>Walmart 4.5v car adapter>rat shack M plug. Please let me know if this would work or if you have a better idea.
Peace

I got a thinkin' and I have a 3-1 battery booster which is a SLA 1v 18a battery pack w/ cig output, air compresser, light, and booster. I am thinkin' of buyin' car converter (4.5a) and makin' cable for my NJB3 and I already have r/c cable for my UA5 so I would just have to use r/c friendly plugs. Anyone know how many hours one might get  runnin' a UA5, NJB3 off of 12v 18a SLA or if it would work?
Thanks in advance.

I made a cord for my SLA so I could hook up my NJB3 and UA5 together but only the UA5 powers up. The NJB3 starts up but then turns off after a couple seconds. My cable goes like this:
cig adapter>(2) female r/c connecters>(2) r/c male connecters>4.5 converter> in line fuse (.5 fast blow fuse)>adapter tip "b"
The cig adapter shows power and so does the converter both have red lights and the UA5 runs fine w/ phantom power ans all. Whats up?

can you sketch a rough drawing with all the polarities indicated?  what's the final voltage measurement for the jb3 plug?

This is just a guess and I'm no electrician, but maybe you have the wrong kind of fuse.... perhaps it's blowing too easily. Have you tried running it a second time? If the JB3 doesn't power up at all a second time, it's gotta be the blown fuse.

It surely was not the fuse because it continued to try to start ??? Also my volt converter worked w/ my NJB3 because I tested it w/ my car cig lighter and my SLA. Whut up?

if i'm reading it correctly, the design should work. did you measure the final voltage at the jb3 dc plug?  what's it reading?

My crapshack digital multimeter started goin' whack on continunity settin' so I got pissed and frustrated and set it aside. I think I well rewire the whole cable and mabey this time only put one set of male r/c plugs goin' to the converter.

I rewired my cable and cut out 2 female r/c connecters and 1 of the male r/c connecters. After I rewired I am still experiencin' the same problem but now I think its the SLA and it needs a charge so I am going to charge it up. Anyone have this problem ? Before I hacked my volt converter I tried it w/ my NJB3 in my car lighter and it worked fine. Then I tried it w/ my SLA and it worked okay both times I tried it for only a short period of time (under five minutes). Could this be the problem w/ my NJB3 startin' up and then quitin' ?

rjt;

you really need a voltage meter to answer some of your questions.  12v sla will easily dip down past 10v. this voltage may not be enough for the 4.5v converter.  sounds like there's insufficient voltage to run your jb3. i don't know what the minimum threashold voltage is for the jb3, but it sounds like it's not much lower than 4.5v.

Could the NJB3 not allow the fuse (1/2 amp) to blow by shuttin' down first and in fact I need a higher rated fuse like mabey 1a or 3/4ma?

How sweet it is!!! I got my SLA goin' and the problem was the in line fuse. The NJB3 in my estimate has a circuit or breaker itself and well shut off first before the inline fuse has a chance to blow. Lesson do not add in line fuse to your power cord for your NJB3 or flat out it won't work. I am very stoked and testin' recordin' time as I type and today UPS brought me a new SVU-1 VU meter and let me tell you its worth every penny. I well upload pictures as soon as possible and again I wont be able to test my outdoor setup until 9/11 at Golden Gate park. Can't waite!!

this doesn't make sense, but strange that it's working for you after you removed the inline fuse.  what's the voltage reading on the jb3 plug?

Sorry, like a said earlier in the post ratshack crapmultimeter 8 a big shit. All I know is it works and this brings great pleasure to me and is one of great awards of being a taper. Which my top awards go as:
First show
makin' XLR cables w/ rt angle connecters on both ends
makin' lighter plug adapter for SLA out gig rig
makin' UA5 cable w/ rat shack r/c connecters  duel setup
settin' up my rig
lurkin' around the house for the perfect bag for my set up
