Outdoor OMNI Advise???
« on: August 26, 2004, 12:33:10 AM »
I need advise on runnin' omni at the 9-11 power to the people show at Golden gate park. I made another stand that I can run 9' + and I have my Manfrootto Bogen that also runs this height and my XLR cables are 15' so I could get a pretty could split. My mics are Studio Project C4's and I have only run the cards and I have never seen any sources w/ the C4's omni's ran and I was wonderin' if anyone has tried them yet outdoor or any mic similiar in pattern. Also I am not sure where I well be tapin' from or how far from the stage. I am lookin' for advise on how to or why not to either way any advise well be appreciated. Thanks.
Peace

Sorry no info on the C4 Omni sound but when running Omni's you can do yourself a favor and try to run on one stand w/ a 2'split.  It would be less to carry.  The split can be anywhere from head width to 8' w/o getting a hole in the middle.  The sound will not have as much dynamics as a non omni, I would try for up close (FOB)  try doing a search on mic configurations and /or Omni's both here and on the Oade board...Also the Oade web has some info on mic configurations and usages.
hope this helps

I just got my C4's, so I haven't tried anything yet, but I am think I am going to try to DIY a Jecklin disc.  I don't want to mess with carrying two stands.  I am interested in hearing how it comes out when you're done though!

A boom arm and a clamp is a good, easy way to get a couple foot spread.

Just use the boom to make a "T" at the top of the stand and the clamp so you can mount a mic on the not threaded end of the boom.

faster/easier than making a disc.

If you are going to run split it is much better adjust your split according to distance away from the source. If you are going to be 30 or 40' back you need more than 2 feet to get the optimal image from the omnis. You do have to go with what you have so 15' cables you could do a 5' spread at 9' up you will enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Busman mics of all kinds>some type of busman modified recorder.
