Can someone tell me how to crossfade in Audacity?
« on: August 27, 2004, 01:46:21 PM »
Quick question (I hope!).

I need to combine two tracks (one with a bad cut, which I'm editing out).

I want to fade out track one, fade in track 2 and then combine them into one track, overlapping slightly.

Can someone tell me how to do this in Audacity? I've tried the tutorials and I'm really stuck.

Thanks,

Humbug

Well I can tell you how I did it, but...but I'm 100% sure this is not the cleanest way(!):

1. Open Track 1
2. Project, New Stereo Track (which will open up below track 1)
3. Open Track 2
4. Track 2: Edit, select all.
5. Edit, Cut
6. Go to the new track below track 1, Edit, Paste
7. Highlight track 2 the length of track 1
8. Generate Silence

You now should have Track 1 above track 2, with track 2 starting roughly when track 1 ends. You can play the end of track one, and it'll jump straight to track 2 when it starts.

9. Effect, Fade out on track 1
10. Effect, Fade in on track 2
11. Zoom in
12. Delete tiny bits of silence on track 2 until the playback goes seamlessly from track 1 to 2. Edit, undo if you get it wrong, generate silence if you need more.
What you're looking for is a seamless transition, without a drop in volume.

13. Edit, Select All
14. Project, Quick Mix
15. Edit, Export as wav

I just did the above while I typed this and it took me 10 minutes.

As I said above, I'm sure its not the best way, but more importantly it works, and I can't hear the join. Of course this is between tracks with no music, just audience noise.

Do you really need the silence? Couldn't you accomplish the same thing with the "Time Shift" tool?

If you pick that tool it will let you slide the second track back and forth in time...just by dragging...

just click on the track and move your mouse...

I'm still learning this program, so I'm sure you're right. Will try this next time. +t.
