Looking to record my first show, need help please.
« on: September 19, 2004, 07:55:26 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm planning to record the band, HIM this November in Philadelphia at the Electric Factory and in NYC at Irving Plaza.

I have decided, due to my budget (actually what I want to spend), I've thought about using the Neuros Handheld 20GB MP3 Player (can record to WAV).

I wanted to know if anyone has ever used this, and what the Pros and Cons are for it?

Also, any type of microphone I should be looking for, or can I use the normal head phones that come with this device?

I've also looked around Tapers Section, so if anyone one here can help me, I'd appreciate it.

I also wanted to know if in this picture, the dark plastic holding (have no clue what that is) that is around the Neuros recorder is detatchable?

If so, what exactly does that big plastic thing do, and will it effect my recording.

And, for the record if anyone has used one of these to record in the two venues I mentioned, what would you put your settings at?

And also, here's my situation for the shows.

I'd like to get something that is relatively small, and not huge, you know?

Also, I will not have a laptop with me, to transfer the first night's show out of the recorder, is there a recorder I can use to record both night's shows without having to delete anything from the first night?

I know HIM usually played around 1 hr a little less, I tend to expect that this time around as well.

Any idea what recorder I should use that will have the capabilities I mentioned?

Sorry for all the questions guys, I am a newbie.

Also, any idea what a good microphone would be (that is cheap, but good sound, I do think $230 for microphones are kinda ridiculous, but that's just me.)

That black thing is called a backpack and it contains the hard drive, so yes it is necessary to have it to record. A 20bg hard drive should get you about 30 hours of 16/44.1 recordings, I think. You need that battery back to get about 10 hours of recording time. Looks like you got those pictures from www.soundprofessionals.com. Call Chris there and he will answer any questions you have about it. Also, go to www.neurosaudio.com to learn more about it. No, I don't have one but am considering it.

Don't use the headphones to record - although in theory they will work, I doubt you'll get listenable results.

Mics - you get what you pay for. Suggestions:
-Budget: Sony ECM717 $80 ish
-Budget-mid: Sound Professionals CMC2s $220 incl battery box with bass roll off. You'll probably need bass roll off for HIM.

1 hour = something like 500-600MB. I would imagine you can record plenty of 1 hour gigs on the Neuros before it gets filled. Whether its as reliable as the Nomad JB3 or DAT though..do some searching here.

I am going to be selling some used SP mics w/ battery box (no bass roll-off, no level control) probably within the next week - if you are interested PM me.  Won't be much more than $100 for the mics + bb.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.
