raising gain in wavelab. how much is too much?
« on: September 22, 2004, 01:23:08 PM »
got a show I'm transferring and it is very low.  I have used the change gain in wave lab before but only a few db.  do my question is how much is too much?  are there any disadvantages?  this is a very old show and the only source (not really in circulation yet, I'm working on that)  playing around with it I did it +8db and it is still lower than most thing I tape but it looks a lot better.

24 bit? What were your max peaks before doing the gain adjust?
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

no 16 bit.  I checked peak level in wavelab and it says -7.254db

Well, you can raise it another 7ish db if you'd like...

well, any imperfections will also be amplified. obviously if the source were 24 bit it'd be better, but wadaya gonna do?

just normalize the wav, that should do it, just normalize to 0db, thats what i do :)

and like mentioned, any S-N-R will be amplified, but not too noticeably IMO :)
