Giant Shotgun Mics? (Dead content)
« on: September 29, 2004, 11:16:31 PM »
Quick question...going back to Dead taping scene late 80's...east coast...

I remember seeing some really big shotgun mics at one show...they were like a yard long...and thick...cant recall if the tips were chrome or not...regardless - they were conspicuous...black - as I recall...

Anyone know what these are/were?

I'm familiar with most of the section standards...these were oddballs...like someone brought them out for fun...

These were as thick as, say - an SM57

Just wondering...for some reason I was remembering things today...

Moke was right...the super long guns are the Senns.  We use to joke about being able to tap people on the back from rows behind them (hey do you mind, we are tryiing to see Jerry  ;D ).  Personally I liked the NAK guns better...use to own a set of 300's w/ cards and guns (cp4's) but sold them fo the CK8 guns to run on my 460's.  cleaner sound...althjough that low end NAK distortion was something we all loved.

I think there Senn's. The guy still uses them. Saw him at a few east coast Dead shows this year and last. He carries them in 3 in. PVC with caps. About 3 feet long. ???

Could also be the CP-703 shotgun caps from the CM-700 mics. The guns for the 700's were very, very long (even compaired to the CP-4 guns for the CM-300's).

Just another guess......

Sam
Microtech Gefell SMS2000's (M20 & M21 caps) > Luminous Audio Monarch II's or Audio Magic Silvers > MixPre 3
Grace Designs V3
Marantz PMD661
Core Sound Stealthy Cardiod mics > Battbox> Tascam DR-7

Former Nak CM300 & CM700 Vet (CP1, CP2, CP3 & CP4 caps), MX-100

Its 420.....24/7.....365!! :-)

yes, I have (access to) a Sennheiser MKH 816T

it's about 2 feet or more

I used it as an drumkit overhead for a whole album last year, because I didn't have an other condensers at the time... funny, because it's very focussed, sounds like you're listening to cymbal crashed through a carboard tube...
