Need gear info, newbie

Hey, I'm brand new to the boards, and was referred here off of oarfans.com.  I am trying to get some recording equipment thats easy to  use and somewhat cheap.  Price isn't too big of a problem, but I would like to not exceed $300 if possible.  Plus I have a few questions.  What is JB3 and SBD?  Also, suggestions for equipment is what I am really looking for. Thanks!

I think the usual things you have to figure out are: Open (mic stand) or Stealth recording?

JB3 = hard drive recorder, equivalent to DAT, but easier to use. Discontinued.
SBD = Soundboard

Yeah it might be easier to transfer stuff because you don't need a digital soundcard to convert, but what could be easier than putting a tape in a deck and pushing record?

Yeah, my thing was the equivalent thing.  He probably means that they are both used to as recorders, but they aren't equivalent when you look at spec kinds of things.

hehe. You guys are really picky. What I probably should have said was 'alternative'. Never actually used a DAT myself, but nothing could be easier than pressing record on the JB3..

I've never used a DAT either, but I was talking more about DAT's having way better A/D converters, primarily.  That, to me, is the biggest downfall of the NJB3.

you can run those mics into that battery box and into the line in on the MD.  Is it a sony MD?

ebay.  Probably about $150-$175 for a refurbished or used 20gb, plus you'll need an extra battery, that's $35.

You sure can, but you'll still need an external pre-amp/battery box because the pre-amps in the MDs overload too easily.

Ok, that's what I figured you were referring to.  Strictly as recorders though, the jb3 is just as good as a DAT IMO.
