Topic: is this stealth rig good for a beginner?

Hi, i'm a newbe and wanna start recording shows.

I read almost the entire forum and i'm stunned by all the abbreviations.

I want two small devices. No preamp or external a/d.

I decided to go with a Sony NH900 or NH1 hi-md recorder and a ecm719 mic. These things are available for a decent price where i live.

Question: Are there any objections towards these devices? Why should i buy something else? Or is this stuff ok for a beginner?

for what you are paying for you're hi-md you could get a HD recorder and not have to buy expensive discs.
Other than media costs sounds good.  My first rig was mini disc>sony ecm-907

you get what you pay for.  I'm sure that mic is not going to sound great into a minidisc recorder.  I am not familiar with it, though.

Try to up the quality of your mics at least.

I would hunt down a JB3 (Saving you anywhere from $50 - $100+ over the MD) use the money you saved by getting the JB3 to up the mics. I think many will agree that mics should be priority #1. There are several options that should be in your price range and getting a JB3.

Yeah, sony mics get a thumbs down.  I like my Core Sounds.

i have some dynamic audio mics which that i'm trying to sell.  probably cheaper than the ecm and sound a lot better.  sorry for advertising these, but i need money for the v3

I heard some recordings from a ecm719 and md recorder and i liked them. If you consider this crap, maybe i should go to a doctor and have my ears checked

i think you'll be able to tell the difference.  also, just out of curiousity, how much are paying for the ecm mic?  i bet i could beat that price on my DAB's

yeah, i could probably do that...i don't know what shipping would be to europe tho.

ecm's are decent, i think they sound better if you're taping with them outside...but in my opinion, you can find better for near the same price.

Where is overe here? There's a guy on eBay in the UK that's had refurb JB3's for sometime now. I believe someone on the board purchased a new LCD screen from him.....Here's one, not sure if it's the same guy:
