Exact diaphragm location on AKG ck6x caps?
« on: October 21, 2004, 12:22:04 PM »
I'm trying to figure out where the diaphragm is on these caps. Is it right behind the screen behind the bars at the very front of the cap? I was just examining them and it appears that the screen might be pushed in on one side, so if the diaphragm is right behind it, it isn't perpendicular to the body of the mic like it should be. I'd take a picture, but I don't think it would show well. I haven't had a chance to run these live, but have tested them by recording from computer speakers. I don't hear much difference between them and there isn't a hum, so I wonder if it is worth sending if off for repair? If it is messed up, any idea if it is possible for AKG to fix this and how much it would cost?

shine a light in there and you should be able to compare the 2.  Make a test run and see what the levels are then switch cap and rerun test...if one cap is slightly less in response, you may have to either match up your cap/bodies/pre/cables (or just turn one side up)....to get each to be close OR if it is was off send it to AKG for review.

Thanks JAH. I had pretty much done everything you suggested already. Here's the recording I made with the mic 1' away from my computer speaker. Only change was taking off and putting on caps. File was roughly chopped up in SF5 and peiced together then encoded to flac. It's about 5 MB - if anyone wants to give their opinion on differences and guess which cap is dinged I'd appreciate it. These are ck63 caps btw.

wish I could help more but Firewall at work and limited to dial up at home (in the boonies, shit cable doesn't run here...wtf)...someone should be able to chime in.  How much diff is there btw caps in dB...under 2, I wouldn't worry about it if all responses are ok and you have the ability to make up for it in the chain.  Otherwise looks like a new cap for you. ;-(

hope it works out

Mics: AKG ck63

Yeah looks like one of the caps has a dent in the top/front screen. Doesn't seem to have a drastic effect on the sound quality, but I'd like to know if it's going to throw off my included angle when running ORTF, DIN, etc. Did you listen to the two recordings?

Here's a photo - I emailed AKG about repair, but haven't heard anything.

My concern is that the diaphragm on the damaged mic might be pointing towards the good mic instead of straight up like it is supposed to.

AKG response was that if it touched the diaphragm it would already sound bad. If I wanted to do things the cheap way, I should use it until it sounds bad and then send it in for repairs. Repair would be $80 + S&H.  ::)

Bought some 460s, 61s, 63s and RA adapters from a guy off Ebay. Everything was sold as "excellent condition".  ::) I tried them out and everything sounded good so I gave him good feedback and forgot about it. I've been busy since then and haven't really looked at them until yesterday when I noticed this. It's pretty easy to miss since the outer part doesn't have any marks really.

wow. that is 10x worse than mine was dented

i just had a small tiny dent in the black outside rail looking things...

i guess i didnt really have a dented cap, just the outside was dented and didnt affect performance

i dont see how they would have done that w/out damaging the outside of the cap??!?!?!?!?
