In the help file for flac is simply says "8 is best" but it doen's say if it is a smaller file or a more acurate audio file. Am I correct in assuming that flac is lossless whatever the setting?

yes it's lossless and with 8 it will be a smaller file. not that much smaller but with hosting bt ect and having only 30kbs anything helps. and as I archive all my shows in flac I like to cut down on disc space as much as possible.

8 if I am going to let the computer run overnight or for a while while I go do something else.
6 if I am in a hurry and want to start burning off FLAC's.
Shit, I still have shows from a month ago still sitting on the HD waiting to get burned off...

If you're going to distribute it online, there's no reason to not encode at 8.
If you're just going to archive it for yourself, any encoding works.
