Hi,

I have read that the IRIVER is not recommended for bootlegging.  Does anyone know whether the just released IRIVER H320 has the same problems.

fyi - we frown upon the term bootlegging, it implies illegal profiteering off of your recordings, which we are against.

sorry i do not know the answer to your question though.  AFAIK they have not built a great recorder yet that suits our needs.  depending on your needs it might be okay.

can i assume you're looking for a stealthy recorder?  will you be recording bands?  at what types of locations?

It's Ok Karma... try again!  There are many people in this world that think a Concert Archival Recording is a bootleg.  You have just been informed by 4 people in as many minutes that it is not.  Bootlegging is the selling of your recordings. 
     The thing you want to look for in a recorder is one that will record a .wav file.  Because MP3 files will make you less money when you go to sell them.  ha ha ha just kidding.  The quality is the key.  Take the time to read through some of the posts here and you will learn a lot about equiptment, technique, and general recording.  Most of us use either DAT, or a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 (JB3)  The JB3 is a hard drive recorder like the iriver stuff but it is able to record .wav files.  They can be foiund on e-bay in Creative's e-bay store or used from whoever.

Ok I stand corrected for using the term "BOOTLEGGING" instead of simply recording a show as a music fan.  Now that I have been flogged for my political incorrectness, I will no longer use the that ugly term. 

I know that the JB3 is like the holy grail here.  I am hoping for advice however on what might be the next best thing in the harddrive world (no DATS please) for somone who wants to record rock shows but also wants something akin to an IPOD.  In other words, maybe something that is not as good as the JB3 for simply recording but smaller and has more non-recording features than the JB3 which is not in production anymore.

You can still get refurbished JB3's on eBay.

There really isn't anything that is comparable to the JB3 as far as steathable HD recorders right now.

FYI, the iriver does record in wav, at least the H100 series, not sure on the 300's:

I have the H140.  I record with it.

Pros:  It's tiny, fits in your pocket.  It records to wav, and then is hard drive, plug and play, no sound card needed.  It's a nifty little music player too, with fm radio, .ogg support, all the shit you get from an iPod.

Cons:  74 minute file limit on recording, you gotta do a "flip".  Regular sample drops that bother some people, personally my ear can't hear it, but some have reported an audible "click" at regular intervals.  No recording levels while you are recording, so you'd have to get a separate meter to monitor your levels on the fly.

I think the JB3 is still the best option for a HDD recorder, but I do just fine with the iRiver.
