LD Card question
« on: November 04, 2004, 07:26:47 PM »
This may be a dumb question but I'm not sure about this one.
Ok so here is my the mic that I have

The question I have: Is there a front and back to cards? (better put if I were to turn the mic in the pic around would I be recording the back of a venue?)
I've been reading  up alot on cards and I think I still do not fully understand all of the technical stuff such as the "rear lobe"
( which brought me to wonder about this question)
I am going to tape Snake Oil Medicine Show this weekend and I wanted to try a diffrent configuration. I want to make sure it will be right. I always make sure the side with ADK on it is facing forward assuming there is a front and the tapes sound fine.
Sorry if this has an obvious answer I'm just not finding it. +T in advance for help with my confusion.

There are front and backs to every pattern. Cards are no exception. I believe with ADKs, the "ADK" is the front. Look at the polar charts for your mics and they will clarify. Imagine 0 degrees being straight in front of the mic and 180 being directly behind it.
Out of the game … for now?

correction- omnis technically don't have a front and back.

Correction - omnis are directional at higher frequencies ... check out the polar diagram for the DPA 4006, for example.

Nice mics...

I use the ADK A51S LEs (Type IV).  Same mic as yours, but silver (yours are Type V, right???), and I have a mathced pair...

But yeah, the ADK label is the "front", the side you want pointed (generally) in the direction of your sound source.

***Do you have PHISH, VIDA BLUE, JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT or any other Phish related DATs/Tapes/MDs that need to be transferred???  I can do them for you!!!***

I will return your DATs/Tapes/MDs.  I'll also provide Master FLAC files via DropBox.  PM me for details.

Yes mine are the Type V and I am very happy with them. Mine are not matched however I doubt anyone could tell the diffrence there is such a small diffrence between the two.
Thanks agian guys for clearing this up I plan on running DIN tomorrow night I can imagine what it would of sounded like if I had them backwards  ;)

Yeah, from what I hear, ADKs are good enough that they don't really need to be matched in order in to get a good pair.  Props on the Type Vs!!!
