rear speaker setup

I am re-situating my 5.1 system and rather than buying speaker stands, a more preferable option for my room would be to buy small shelves for the rears.  Curious if mouting on shelves has any drawbacks compared to stands.  I can't think of anything, but thought I'd check.

Are your rears ported in the back of the speaker by any chance? Most likely you will hear no difference as long as the front, firing edge of the speaker is on the edge of the shelf, so no reflections can occur.

you know i thought about that for a while, but i decided against it and this is why- my speakers are a touch heavy in the bass, and i prefer that not dissipate through a shelf, but be given more open space to dissipate.

Heath,

The port being couped up in a bookshelf could cause "boomyness" in the low end. The port will being firing into the cavity of the shelve and might cause audible issues. Just a heads up.

thanks jason.  I'm going to keep that in mind as I make my decisions.  I might end up biting the bullet and just buying some new stands, after re-evaluating the shape and layout of the room.  So many options...

Now to find the best way to run the cable to those speakers without the fiance killing me....
