Topic: Taper Newb help.......

Hello all! I was directed here to get a little advise on starting to tape shows. I have been taping with shity little stealth mics or tapping into others setups but now i am ready to get my own mics. I understand i need to do some listening to find out what mics i prefer but i was hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My budget on mics is about 6 bills and i would like to maximize what i can get. I am opne to any and all suggestions and thanks in advance!!

What type of music?  Size venues?  Is $600 the budget for mics only, or for mics + pre + ADC + recorder?

i have a d8 i have been using and its been serviced recently and in good shape so the only loot i need to drop is on the mics. I have about 6 bills for the mics and not really looking at a pre-amp as of yet (next big purchase). So yeah about 6 bills for the mics....if i can get away with less then i would def be stoked!!

im looking for a good overall mic....large to medium venues...and possibly outdoor if i can

music would be a lot of jam bands, bluegrass, and rock

you can pick up a pair of used ADK TL's for 600-650.  Have been a couple pairs up for sale in the ts. yardsale from time to time.  Multi-patern pickup make these very versatile mics.  Lots of happy TL users here.

The TL's would give you the most bang for the buck though

Sounds like $600 is for the whole set up, not just mics, so you guys might be shooting too high.

How about for mics look into Superlux (HMK8?) , ADK SC-T's, or Oktavas (not exactly sure on the prices of all these per pair, but probably $150-250?).

For a preamp/ADC get the Oade digi-mod UA-5 with battery pack. ~300

Some cheap cables, t-bar, and stand from ebay or guitar center.

Might be able to come in at not too much more than $600 depending on the mics.

you could get a pair of AKG 391's (or 393 is you want the hypers), for somewhere in the $400 to $450 range, used.  this would leave you with enough left over to pick up a ps-2 to provide phatom power (which you'll need), and some mic cables, and whatever misc. stuff you'll find that you need.  and the mics sound very good

I agree with Todd R.  Some mics in the $150-$200 range + an Oade digi-mod UA5.  The UA5's pre/ADC will sound MUCH better than your D8's, and there are some good options for lower end mics that sound pretty damn good (Todd mentioned a few, and there may be others - anyone else want to chime in?).

And the you'll be able to grow with the UA5 without having to change out all your gear - get a warm/presence/transparent mod, add new mics in front of it without needing to change your pre/ADC combo, run a JB3 instead of your D8, run 24-bit to laptop, run a 3-mic or SBD/AUD matrix, etc.  Gobs of future flexibility for if/when you want to start mixing things up a bit.

Hey, sort of off topic per this thread but still right along the lines of the topic...

How do you go about finding out if a venue allows taping?
I have emailed 2 different venues and neither of them will return my emails.
I was polite and explained about Performers taping policy etc.
I did not ask about soundboard patching just bring in my own gear set up
where they would like me to.
I can't even get a rude answer let alone any answer!
Do you just call the venue?
Seems like a simple answer but I am not really sure what else to do..
Would a no reply be as good as a yes hehe

I find phoning venues is a far more effective communications channel.  IME most venues don't have a problem with it if the musicians are okay with it.

agreed, unless it's a big stadium or such w/ a no taping policy, as long as it's cool w/ the band you're probly good to go.

thanks all....yeah i like the idea of getting equipment i can grow with so maybe getting some lower end mics first would be better off. Ill keep poking around but if anyone else has suggestions or anything for sale let me know
