flac playback on JB3
« on: December 22, 2004, 12:48:45 PM »
I've scoured the archives, I've scoured the Yahoo/jb3 forum, no luck.  Reading from Notmad's revision history, it makes it sound like it's possible to play flac's from the jb3.  But how!?

Here's some snippets from Notmad's revision history page:

AudioMorph "2"
We have completely overhauled the AudioMorph framework for transcoding files on-the-fly. The new AudioMorph features a brand-new intuitive user interface for specifying how you want each audio file format to be handled. AudioMorph also now supports more external plugin encoders and we've also added support for the popular FLAC format. This means that with the appropriate plugins, you can now enjoy your Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files on your Nomad in addition to MP3, WMA, and WAV files. As before, you can also reduce the bitrate of your existing files. There is also a new option for quickly switching AudioMorph on and off for all formats at once.

Are they refering to the JB3?...Notmad covers all the Nomads...not just the Jb3

Are they taking about a 3rd party version of the Nomad firmware/OS? - I've been hoping somebody would come along with something like that...(not that I can think of anything else I need my JB3 to do...)

I only purchased the version that is for the JB3.  It's unclear in their version history if they are just talking about the JB3 or if they are talking about all Nomad products.  One way or the other, there is no exlusion for the JB3, so it leads me to believe that it's possible.

I do not believe there is a third party os for any of the creative players.  All I believe the above is referring to is a third party windows front-end for importing files into the nomad/etc.  It appears that the improvements to this front end are the ability to convert other file formats not supported by the creative frontend or players to a format supported by the players.  I.e. will convert flac files to the wav or mp3 formats the creative players support.

The only players I'm aware of that play flac files are the iaudio m3 and the rio karma.

Thats what I thought too - but this line seems to say otherwise...

But - that could be just poorly written...

Ok, finally figgered it out.  You cannot play flac files on the jb3 (I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up)  :(  But, what the above statement means, is that when you have notmad software, with the options set up a certain way, and when you TRANSFER a flac file to your jb3, that it will automatically convert that file to something the jb3 can use (wav, mp3, wma).
