Omni Configurations
« on: January 23, 2005, 07:11:27 PM »
Can anyone recomend some configs for omnis? I'm about to get some omni caps and I've never used them before. Thanks in advance.

Oh...and added to that....anyone here have much experience running omni Naks. I can't seem to find anything on the archive where they've been run except in 3 mic configs.

I've run split omni's and "critically spaced omni's - Healy"  I like split omni's a lot, but the healy method wasn't all that great.  The oade site has good information http://www.oade.com/Tapers_Section/faq-mic.html  and below is a picture of the Healy Method.  The top mics on the stand are akg 393's in DIN (mirth's mics) and the ones below are my SP c-4's in the healy method.

That healy thing doesn't look so hot. Maybe onstage for jazz or something. XY doesn't really work well with omni's either.

ORTF and Jecklin disk/baffle are where they shine in my experience! Have fun!

I generally prefer jecklin and binaural... Not sure if this works well with Naks though.

Charles read thru that huge discussion on "spaced vs. jecklin". Someone last summer did a dead show with Nak omnis(The Dead Cricket Pavilion Phoenix, AZ6/22/2004 Source: Nakamichi CP-2 Omnis (spaced 1.5 ft) > Nakamichi CM 100s > DMIC-20 48 > Coax >Sound Professionals Digital Signal Convertor > Optical > Nomad JB3). Check bt.etree to see if it gets reseeded. The book says 39 inches for A/B stereo, and his spacing was far less. I'm thinking of trying a Jdisc this summer with CM702's or CM1002's.

In the Healey method...both mics are facing each other or away from each other? Or can it go both ways?
