Topic: Intense Summer Heat and Taping?

Will be hitting Coachella this year and was thinking about audio or even possibly minidv video recording.  However my biggest concern is the heat as you are practically in desert conditions there with well over 100 degree weather. 

How well do DAT, MD, JB3, minidv with heat?  Any tips or pointers?

The JB3 will definately not survive the heat unless you have a way to cool it.  For festies i keep mine in a ziplock bag in the waterpouch of my camelbak.  A D8 should also survive the heat.  dunno about md's

anyone remember Sam Boyd Silver Bowl G.D. shows when it was 119+ had me an old Sony MZ-1. (1992 MD recorder) the unit would randomly overload on any given day, cold or hot it would just cook itself, almost too hot to touch, but... it still seemed to record... My imported sharp was a champ last summer in 90+ temps with 80+ humidity and no issues were encountered. Most units will run in ambient temps of 109 and above, from the specs i have rousted up. California im bettin' will be mild compared to other years, maby wet... but that is just a guess... see you there...

I think that's a bit of a strong statement.  I've recorded with my JB3 in sunny, hot, humid, sweltering conditions without difficulty.  YMMV.  Best to keep it out of direct sunlight - I use a small umbrella to shade my gear.  And I keep the bag open so the JB3 can breathe.  Haven't had a problem yet.

You have to look at the JB3 on per-unit basis...they all seem to behave differently when it comes to heat...

One of mine wont run in any heat - another seems to have no known limits...

breathing is the key but for stealth taping it isn't much of an option generally.  The times i have killed a JB3 was zipped up in my bag while recording

Sooner or later Im going to swap the HD out of my more heat sensitive JB3...if that doesnt help - its the DRILL!

robc on here has his faceplate removed for extra airflow, so thats always an option
