Topic: Taping from non so good positions

I was just reading the hansonblueeyes fan thread about taping from 1st row.
We all know that 1st row it's not the best place to tape, but how would be taping from the following scenarios?

-"Semi front row": we are not in 1st row, but very close. Let's say 10-15 meters from stage.
- Seats: 45% angle from stage.
- The very rear of the big stadiums.

I plan to see some "big bands" this year (U2, REM), which you can't really choose your place, it really depends on ticketmaster, lol

depends on teh band...if they use IEMs, (ie no monitors on the stage) you may not get a good tape...that being said, I have seen shows where the band has PA speakers on the front of the stage pointing out to the audience...good tapes have been made there...

where the seats are dont matter...in that position, you will likely get a stack tape...which can sound solid.

I once taped from the front row, but I thought I was 10th row.  I bought tickets for The Who in 2002 and the way the venue laid out, Deer Creek, I was 1st row; on paper I was 10th row.  I was seated just below the left stack and even though they taped from the board, I wanted an AUD.  I pointed my mics straight up (normally not a good idea, of course) and pulled a wicked tape.  It was a huge rush taping so close to security.  At times, some big dude would stand right by me which wasn't very appealing, scary is more like it.

So, this is probably different from the norm.  I know a friend has taped from very close and caught the stage monitors.  Even though I was seated further back, I was able to pull a stonger tape since I was hitting the stacks.

I guess it all depends how the venue lays out.

dont bother...too boomy and too echo'ey

Depends on reinforcement, it is remotely possible to pull a good tape at the back of a stadium, but is likely to be mono.
See the rear stack as your sound source.  expect "slap-echo" and tons of phasey audience noise, then be surprised if it's better

good seats too close = trade back
bad seats = score some good seats out front before the show.
     If there is an opening band there are usually some sweet tickets released at the box office once the opener
        starts.
     Ticketmaster also often has some good seats the day of the show.
     That being said, you might have to sell your original tickets at a discount.  Sometimes that's the price for pulling a
       great tape

In that case I would see if you could run some hypers and point them straight at the stacks.

and don't be afraid of eq if you need it to make it listenable!
