Topic: Cards or Hypercards - which would suit me best?

I have the SP-CMC-6s (AT943s) right now. The -6 is the omni caps, the -8 is the card, and the -10 is the hypers. Now that Sound Pros is stocking the -8/-10s again, I was wondering which would be the better choice given the types of venues and bands I tape.

I'm usually anywhere from 10-20' dfc in a relatively small room (capacity 220), though I also tape at a 550 person venue that's about twice the size, where I'm right in front of the board (which sits about 25' back, right side). The bands would fall in the general 'rock' genre, anywhere from indie rock to punk and whatever in between.

I know the differences between cards/hypers, though I haven't been able to find out which type of cap would give me better results. Since I tape relatively close to the stage, the hypers would be a bit too narrow, no? Or are the cards too broad for the smallish venues I'm usually in? The omnis I have give me a decent feel for the room, but I'd like something that doesn't bury the band as much. Just not sure which direction I should go, so any help would be much appreciated.

I would think hypers would give you the best results for indoors shows in local venues, and can cut down on the boom in your tapes, if you experience that.  Hypers are not really that narrow - look at frequency graphs for cards and hypers and see how they differ - it is not that extreme.

i thought that hypers are better when your futher back with high ceils. by the way what does the height have to be in order to use the hypers?

for the local venues in most cities I would say hypers all the way unless you are doing stage lip or on the stage...indoors I use my m41's 9 times out of 10

Would the money put into the Hypers matter that much if you already have Cards?

Are we talking about wearing / stealthing mics?

I tape almost exclusively in local bars/venues, and I love omnis in hrtf.

Yep, it's stealth in a place that doesn't pat down and doesn't really mind tapers.

I have the omnis now, but they're just a little too friendly to the room and lack the focus on the music that I'd prefer. If the mics were of a bit better calibur, or the venue's sound was sharper, the omnis would probably shine more...but after having done plenty of shows there I end up with clean tapes that I'm quite happy with, but with bands that are set back too far in the environment. Basically, what you'd expect from some lower mid-level omni mics.
