william - regarding your question about digi output for patchers:

What is set as the recorder's SR and bit depth is what is output, thus in 24 bit mode the outputs will have 24 bit data.  Remember, though, that you can input a 24 bit signal into a 16 bit
recorder. The least significant 8 bits will be truncated.   

I spoke with John Hart yesterday and he is going to put his AD2K on the backend for proper word length reduction to send to DAT patchers.  Now that is a nice TAPER.

quite honestly if this thing doesnt sound good without something in front of it, I will be shocked....

that being said, I am still holding out hope someone comes out with a HD recorder with no pre/AD section....just dont see myself getting rid of my V3 anytime soon...

so what is the street price & expected widespread availability of these boxes?  i know i looked this up before, but are they an "all in one" like the v3 / ua5?

722 = $2650 U.S. Retail
744T = $4250 U.S. Retail

Street is probably going to be real close if not exactly this since they are still hard to get. However, when I compare this to the 10K I spent for the Deva, it's a bargain. Although they really aren't competing for the same dollars (maybe the 744T, but it would take two 744Ts to have the correct number of tracks and then there are issues associated with the tracks when they are ganged together).

SD is still having issues getting these out the door to everybody waiting for them, so it's a total WAG when vendors have these "in stock" ... In all honesty, I've never known pro gear like this to be "in stock", usually it's built when somebody orders it. I had a 3 week wait for my Deva and they aren't new, it's just that most of these companies are small (think Grace) and they don't build 1000's of them like Tascam and Sony can and do.

Based on the single 7xx / V3 comp I heard a while go, this thing's gonna sound mighty fine.  If memory serves, I still preferred the V3 pre/ADC but the differences were reasonably subtle such that most folks probably couldn't tell the difference.

Wow, all that AND it's waterproof?

first thing i did was open it up and found a samsung 40 gig drive in it.  it's just suspended in there, with foam protecting it

i was afraid to take the ide connector off but it came off.  i attached the new drive and spent about 10 min trying to put it back together.  you have to line the bottom up so that little tabs click into place, then put the screws back in

I've done the drive removal a few times....Nutter's prototype had issues with transfering the files, so we had to remove the drive and hook it up to an external drive case.   Hopefully they've got this squared away...have your transfers been successful?

It'll fit in your pants, I ran the 744 for Dylan....it get's pretty warm though.  I put it in a fanny pack after I got in, it was cookin' in there.

If it were in your pants, it could be uncomfortable.   Not hot enough to burn you though...should be safe enough...might make your juevos toasty (not a great idea if you want to have kids in the future!).   
I didn't have any trouble with it in the fannypack, but I try to keep it out in the open when I have ran it for taping allowed shows.
