Any opinions on core sound HEBs?
« on: March 08, 2005, 02:21:31 AM »
I've been considering upgrading from CSBs to their HEBs. I much prefer the sound of omni's to other pick-up patterns, so I'm sticking with that. But as far as which omnis, I'm still not sure. I've heard recordings using the HEBs and they sound fantastic. They do carry a hefty price tag, but I'd be willing to spend the dough if they were everything I thought they were. I don't see much mention of them on this board though which concerns me. Anyone have an opinion?

Do a search on DPA4061 or DPA4060, which are the CS HEB.

Never owned any (I prefer cardioid stealth mics), but great, great mics. One day maybe I'll pick up a set.

Some people (including me) feels that they cut to much bass. I don´t know if the filter is in the batterybox or on the mics themselves.

A pair just went on eBay for $640 so they are pretty desirable.

I've owned of HEB's for about a year now and have made some brilliant sounding tapes. Very satisfied. The only upgrade I'd consider from here would be if DPA made a cardiod pair like the 4022's in a similar battery box driven setup. My only regret with the HEB's/DPA's is not getting them sooner...

p.s. I'm expecting this post to follow very shortly with the moronic "DPA's rule your face" post...err

I made the move from CSB's to DPA 4060's two years ago. They are well worth the price and the difference is like night and day I find.
You can make really good recordings with CSB's, but the DPA's have such amazing detail and clarity that those Panasonic capsules are not capable of.
As far as bass is concerned, I don't think they lack anything. (In fact, I have to cut some bass most of the time.) Maybe that's the bass roll-off in the HEB batt box? I don't know.
Anyway, if you decide to upgrade, I don't think you would regret it.

I'm going to say that it's the battery box. Every 4060 tape I've heard has *plenty* of bass, they are after all omni's....

Yup.  I think its the difference between 4061's from DPA and HEB's from Core Sound.  I've been hearing from a lot of people that they think the 4061's have too much bass, and need roll-off.  I'm not in that camp.

See here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=36515.0

Personally, if I were you, I'd look the Lemo 406x on Ebay, and power them with a sound pros bb.  You'll save yourself some $.    The only thing I'd do different, I think, is get 4060 instead of 4061s, cause the 4060's are high sensitivity, and I don't get maximum dynamic range with my rig as currently configured.

FWIW- it was HEBs -> sbm-1 -> dat tapes from ellaguru that made me get 4061s, and I love them.  He's made some sick tapes with the HEB's.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

As others have pointed out, the coresound HEBs are just DPA406x. I own a pair of 4060s, and I love 'em, HOWEVER, I do NOT love coresound...

...I've ranted about coresound on this forum in the past, search for the "critique your rig" thread. Here is a summary:

1) 7 weeks from placing my order with coresound to receiving it. took many emails and phonecalls, several excuses from coresound.

2) coresound is, from what I can tell, a 1-person operation (Len)

3) Len generally doesn't reply to emails... as I found out.

4) not related to the HEBs, but... coresound optical cables are poor quality, and their Mic2496 has issues (or at least, I have issues with the Mic2496). search the "critique your rig" thread.

If you WERE considering a Mic2496 (please don't), the 4060s give out too hot a signal, you'll be constantly clipping. do yourself a favour and get 4061s.

Having said that, I'm VERY happy with my 4060s. Recently I've been running DPA4060 > MPS6030 > JB3, even running them at a fuckoff loud concert I had plenty of headroom (should have bumped the gain on JB3 up by a few dB). I've made some amazing recordings with this rig (in my opinion, of course!).

Now if only I could afford a pair of 402x ::)

best regards,
stephen

I'm usually paralyzed thinking about how the tapes gonna turn out  :P...There sweet ass mic's!!! Go with Dpas not heb .I had a rare instance where one mic was off 6dbs after a 7 months of taping..Doug Oade tested said that the mic said it couldnt take the bass like the other mic.Dpa couldnt find anything wrong with them ..They said if the customer isnt happy we will send them a brand new pair and they did..+T to Doug Oade and Dpa ..Add the  MMA 6000 and a mod sbm-1 and you will have a hard on for quite some time :)
