Retro: what would you choose for stealth analog?
« on: March 15, 2005, 03:35:47 AM »
What type of portable cassette deck would you choose for stealth live recording?  Sony TCD-D5?  Something from Marantz (not sure about their models)?  Lately I've been waxing nostalgiac for cassette recording but this kind of knowledge seems hard to come by these days!

I always used the D5 - but it wasnt easy. Today - this deck would have a tougher time getting through security...

But - IMO - it was the only Sony portable (of that era) that had a stable transport.

Both the D3 and the D6 were notorious for azimuth drifts and shifts...although they are stealthy-er...

The Marantz group, while a bit bigger - are made of plastic - (I think) - perhaps some advantage in the sneak...

But in the day, - a camera strap, hanging the deck high in the small of your back would do the job.

A buxom woman can also be of assistience concealing the D5...

Oh, the old diversion tactic.  They watch her as you sneak through, huh? :)

I actually saw a taper just the other night stealthing a d5 and a couple of nak300's. He must have been an analog purist!

I used a D3 way back, and was a direct victim of the azimuth drift.  I had no idea what was going on, and it really ticked me off.  Ended up throwing the stupid thing in the garabage!  Now I wish I hadn't.

I've tracked down a D6 so I'll be giving that a shot.  120 minute cassettes are a bad idea I guess?

Now, about that buxom woman...
