not during the day.  i've used them with some radio shak grille fabric between the cap and screen, cut down the wind a lot.  but, the shures are what i use exclusively now.  i use the 0896's more as a smoke screen than a wind screen.  see you there.

make some dead rats!

QFT

I can put the dead ratsover my DPA's and put the mics althe way up to the cieling fan on high and it is crystal clear.  used em many times in downtown where the wind is swirling and heavy and had much success.

FYI i basically made a koozie pattern out of the fir and stiched it up.  fits perfectly over the DPA's

I was thinking this the otherday, I think Im gonna go this route. as Here in Kc 99% of the time the DPA's are plenty .
But I may have my Virgin taping Experience at "the Rocks" this year for Our 12th annual  ABB Red Rocks shows. And Im thinking The DPA's are not gonna cut it..
+T for the idea..

nfw.

dead rats over the dpas work really well. haven't had a chance to use in serious outdoor wind, but they do the job with some seriously blowing a/c and smoke handlers in clubs.

Where can I find the giant DPA windscreens that everyone talks about? I'd like to fashion some dead rats ala m0k3 for my AT's.

Shure A81WS are the heavy duty wind screens for 19mm microphones

Can anyone comment about how well the A81WS cut the wind noise down or cut down the high end?  Anecdotes or 'tall-tales' welcome!

The Shure A81WS beat the pans of the DPA UA0896 when it comes to preventing wind noise, IME.  I've used the A81WS the last few summer's primarily for festivals and have encountered zero wind noise, even through some pretty blustery weather at RockyGrass.  FWIW, I use my UA0896 indoors and the A81WS outdoors.  Can't comment on cutting down the high end as I haven't noticed it, though I haven't done any direct comps ws v. no-ws.

I do the same as Brian. I use the Shure's outside, since I'm in Colorado. I've never done a comparison. My thinking is, even if they do cut a bit of high end, it's better than wind noise. And much better than no recording at all.

Required Red Rocks Accesorries. Along with the umbrella and ponchos, winter hats, down parkas, and ski pants. Woohoo can't wait!!

Those Shure screens are pretty cheap too if I remember right.
