Topic: Recomendations for good studio/live drum mics????

I'm looking to buy a set of mics for recording and monitoring my drumset with and am not seeing much info about up and downs to different mic brands.  Most important is the quality of sound that they will reproduce, but I am also not looking to spend a thousand dollars on these either.  I was leaning more towards the Shures mostly because it's a name that I trust for quality, but is there a different brand that I'm overlooking that has better sounding drum mics?  If it matters, I play very loudly and mostly metal.

If your just looking to record your kit for monitoring purposes then what's wrong with the DPA's you already have?  Or are you looking for stereo overheads or snare and kick drum mics?

Yeah that's what I use now for recording my sessions for critquing....but I want something to mic up my entire kit for recordings and gigs.  One mic per one drum and at least 2 or 3 overheads.  I'm wanting some mics with a very rich low end that can handle being amped to the sky!

The Beyer M201 and the AKG-D112 are a great snare/kick mic combo you may want to look into...

Better than the shure's?  I'm looking to not have to upgrade this rig for at least a few years

The AKG D112 is a standard, commonly used kick drum mic you'll find in most studios and a lot of better equipped clubs. The Beyer M201 I suggested for snare micing is a much better alternative to the commonly used Shure SM57. If you’re looking for mics to capture full bodied tone and detail at a respectable price, then both these mics are an ideal starting point.

Ok cool.  How many overheads am I going to want though?  I have a decent spread of cymbals (20" zildjian ride, 20" paiste ride, 14" zildjian fast crash, 10" zildjian A splash, 14" zildjian vintage hats)with one ride on each side.

Two overheads in XY should be fine. Take a look at the AT 37R's.

You should buy each cymbal for that cymbals sound, brands mean nossing!  That's like saying you can't play basketball without Nike's.  I'm much more interested in the Paiste dark series right now over anything else to be honest.  Maybe looking to add an instanbul hihat also.  I admit it...I play prog drums with a metal intensity
