DIY Speaker Stands (Heavy Duty Stylie)

So my dad is one handy dude with practicall anything mechanical.  He works 3rd shift (6pm-6am) as a maintenance mechanic at a factory and they happen to have lots of free time (and free materials!).  I didn't feel like shelling out $100 for speaker stands....

I showed him this picture out of a Parts Express catalog:


Told him to make them heavy.

He dropped them off today, I didn't weigh them but they probably weigh about 65lbs a piece, made of 1/4 inch stainless.  It's all covered in industrial primer there, I'm thinking of shooting them down with that textured matte black spray paint you can get...  Had good resuls with other stuff in the past.

powder coat would be sweet.
I would check in with some local auto body shops to see who they know.
I don't imagine it being that cheap but can't see it costing an arm.
I am sure that would win bonus points from the wife..

Heh, that door is so cheesy security wise.   Has to be from the 1920's, all it has is a little flip lock (think screen door) and it's got tons of glass.  So in that respect, I'm using my entertainment system as a anti-break in device...although now in afterthought perhaps I'm making the thiefs round trip to the car that much shorter by placing my stereo equipment in the doorway ... Have to think that one over!  Luckily I live in a good enough area to hopefully never have to worry about that..

I didn't think powder coating was too expensive.  I was quoted less than $20 to do a coin door for one of my arcade machines.  I sold it before I ever had the chance of doing it though.  It was from another arcade collector though, so YMMV

powder coating isn't expensive. I have had lots of stuff powder coated.

Spray paint it is!   I'll post some pics when I finish them this weekend   Anyone have recommendations for something between the metal of the stand and the speakers?  Is rubber ok there?  I have some rubber that's used in flooring that would seem to be a good fit on top.

2 - 4 mils of Satin Black powder coating & oven cure parts.
A grit blasting preparation would provide you with a higher quality finish.
