M-audio 410/Transit or Edirol FA-66 or USBpre ??
« on: June 15, 2005, 06:41:34 PM »
I was thinking about putting my laptop to work. Does anybody have preferences of Computer interfaces (external or Internal). I would be coming from my V3, digitally. I'm not limited to anything, I would just like to do 24/96 without buying a 722 or 744. I have been seeing alot of people coming out of shows with errors with those anyway. These are just a few I have seen besides the VX pocket.

The M-audio's seem to going pretty cheap. Are they any good?

Or should we all just wait and see what this M-audio Flash Tracker can do?

FYI: USBPre can only record up to 48KHz.

I use a FW410/V3 optical without problems once it was set up correctly. Works fine 24/96 , just wish the 410 was smaller and could draw power from the lappy. An external battery for the 410 works fine and it's relatively pretty thin and small.

Thanks Nic. That was tha answer I was looking for. They are going pretty cheap on EBAY. I am still going to wait and see what happens with this M-audio flash recorder.  I can't imagine how it could have enough storage space to do 24/96 without a harddrive. I just sent an email to Frank at Cascade Media, to see if he had any more info, and to be put on the list.

i'm guessing the edirol will resample, if you're worried about that sort of thing you might not want to get that one.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

Yeah, I don't want to resample, I just want to convert a digi source to USB or Preferably Firewire. I wish Grace would just make the Firewire out for the V3, they say they have been working on for a few years. ::)

I would be coming from my V3, digitally.

That said, the M-Audio Transit should take care of you.  All those other boxes have much more than you need if you just want to write the s/pdif signal from your V3.  Street price is $70 or less, it's small and powers off your lappy.

Taperssection rules:

 mobile 24-bit/96kHz USB audio upgrade

stereo analog/optical digital input (1/8")

 stereo line/headphone output (1/8")

TOSlink optical digital output allows AC-3 and DTS pass-through

 accommodates self-powered stereo microphones

includes 3.5mm (male) to TOSlink (female) adapter

includes Maximum Audio Tools software bundle

So that has an 1/8" optical mini in, right?

So my Toslink to Mini that was going to my JB3, would go to the Transit and then USB to Lappy.

Is there any problem going with USB instead of Firewire. I know Firewire has alot faster transfer rate.

Yeah, that is the only concern for me to. I lack the confidence with a USB port.

Keep in mind that this would drain power from your laptop battery as well. Some may worry unless they have use to a power outlet.

I use the 410 and like it a lot.  I did the V3>410 for a while and now just use the 410 for both pre & A>D.  Can't beat the firewire.  Also should mention that your laptop with power it if it has a 6 pin firewire port.  it is only the 4-pin ports where you have to use the AC adapter.

I would think if it is USB 2.0 there should be no problem. I would be concerned about 24/96 over regular old USB.

That's right - USB 2.0 and firewire are comparable and both are way more than adequate.  fwiw, I always do 4 channels of 24/44.1 on USB 1 and have no problems.

I have a Transit sitting around that was only used about 2 weeks.  Nothing wrong with it; worked quite well.  I just had access to an Audiophile USB and wanted the MIDI ports that come with that.  24/96 worked fine with USB, but I wouldn't suggest having any other USB devices hooked up at the same time.  I'm willing to part with it for $30 shipped.  Original box and all the original documentation and driver disc.  PM if interested.
