dat2wav/Vdat issues
« on: June 19, 2005, 04:11:10 PM »
I have moved my dds drive over to my windows box, but I am having trouble contacting the 2 subject software providers. Do they offer support or even sell new versions anymore? I can go back to linux (or try and find them free somewhere) but its just strange that after multiple emails I haven't gottenĀ  a reply from either, considering I wanna buy something from them. An. info is sure to help... thanks, Kris

vDat doesn't run under Win XP unless something has changed.  Not sure what you're running, but if it's XP, save yourself the trouble of trying to track that one down.

Thanks - tried the demo version and it seemed to work fine though.

Will take a look at DAT2WAV as well then.

Thanks again.

FWIW, nobody ever replied to me either. Someone from datheads sent me a full version since my efforts to actually buy the thing were fruitless.

dat2wav certainly works under windowsXP, and i'm sure you can get vdat working in compatibility mode as well if it works under windows2000..there is very little difference internally between win2k and winxp

thing to make sure with both of these programs is you will need an ASPI layer (preferably the adaptec stuff) installed in the system location

Yes, dat2wav most certainly DOES run under XP.  I couldn't ever get vDat to run...never tried compatibility mode.  I have a simple little GUI I wrote for dat2wav.  PM me if you want it.  It's most certainly an ALPHA version and I have no plans to work on it anymore but it does work (except for maybe the seek function which you probably won't use anyway).

EDIT:  Actually skip the PM thing...I'll just attach it to this msg when I get home (it's not on my lappy at work).

EDIT:  See attached .zip file.  Unzip the .exe to your ../dat2wav directory.

FWIW, a year after the event ....

vDat does run under Xp. The reason it often doesn't appear to work is that it doesn't set the drive in audio mode. If you do that before time using dat2wav then vDat will function, although in my case I still can't get it to write to tape reliably, hence I've been trying (without success) to buy a copy of dat2wav. All efforts to contact the vendor/author have failed, so is there any chance that some kind soul could let me have a copy of the full version please?

I don't expect a response here, but I am trying all options. XP SP3 running here with a properly configured Conner DDS drive and an Adaptec SCSI controller. DAT2WAV starts up momentarily and shuts down immediately. What might allow DAT2WAV to run on my machine? I tried Compatibility Mode and Safe Mode and it does the same thing. Something is catching this command line window and making it stop working. Any ideas?

Have you checked your event log to see if there are any errors?

Is the cmd window closing?

Yes. I meant to say that the CMD window closes immediately.
I am able, however, to operate the program from a CMD window if I open it first.
Using the GUI is not working for now, but that's not an issue, as the commands are so easy.
I am now getting, "Drive failed to initialize..." as many have gotten.
WINDAT works, and VDAT opens but will not see either the Conner or Sony 9000 drive.
I prefer DAT2WAV, because it splits when sample rates change, and reads 32K LP mode so well.
Hm...
