Topic: apple laptop taping.

so im thinking of getting back into taping..

however if i did it would be with an apple I-book G4 (it would be a 1.2 ghz processor and i would upgrade the ram)

my quesitons are:

1. how reliable would this be as apposed to using a jb3?

2. i assume going emagic 2|6 > laptop is the best method?

3. will I have to purchase any extra software to record via the laptop?

1. I'd say probably about the same, but the laptop will get you 24-bit. If you're sticking with 16/44.1, stay with the JB3 because it's much less hassle all around.

2. If you already have the EMI 2|6, that's pretty good. If not, I'd look for a firewire device first (M-Audio, for example).

3. No - Audacity is free/open source.

I have been using my 12" G4/800 iBook with 640mb of RAM and a 60gb drive on an off for the last 1 1/2 years and haven't run into any problems.
iBooks are great computers and well suited for remote/field recording.  I ran Sound Studio that shipped with my iBook but have now switched over to Spark XL. My input interface is a
Edirol UA-5.

Audacity is free/open source.

while I can open/edit a show with Audacity, I have yet to be able to get Audacity to recognize ANY s/pdif input I've plugged in(M-Audio FW410, FW Audiophile, MOTU 828, 828mkii, Apogee MiniMe, etc...)

Check this, I use it on my PC laptop. Got the AT853 slimline sub-cardioids and I cant any be happier with the setup!

why is no one using the m-audio fire wire > protools?  just wondering as it seems way easier to track/master
