Suggestion for Stealth Mics

Hi,

i am not entirely satisfied with my Stealth Mics (DPA 4060's) - i don't like their bassy sound especially for louder concerts. For very calm concerts they just sound alright.
Are there any better mics than the DPAs for stealth use in general?

The MMA6000 is a high quality miniature microphone amplifier and power supply for portable stereo recording, designed for use with all DPA miniature microphones.

For professional and hobby recording applications in the field, on stage or at home the MMA6000 is an indispensable tool, offering a higher sound quality than the microphone input on most portable devices and providing the extra security needed to feel completely safe and self-sufficient in any recording situation.

The MMA6000 is a front end device that provides two independent identical channels in one rugged box. Inputs are fitted with MicroDot connectors. These connectors also provide the supply voltage for the microphones. The gain setting is obtained by a 16-position switch providing steps of 2.5 dB in the range from from 0 dB to 37.5 dB. A low cut switch-in filter (common for both channels) inserts a 12 dB/octave,100 Hz low cut. The output is a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack connector.

The attached clip makes it easy to place the MMA6000 on a belt, strap or bag pocket. Five dedicated quality cables for various recording devices and applications are available as accessories.

So it is just a lowcut that is needed to get a `normal` signal with those mics? (omni issue?)

I have been using the MMA6000 with the 4060 mics since the fall, recorded about 100 concerts with M1 and R1.  I've had DPA 4060s since 2001.
The improvement with the preamp is very noticeable for both the M1 and the R1 over the M1 internal preamp (with attenuator cable).  I have not checked bass specifically, but the increased clarity of orchestral texture is evident.  Revisiting things I thought were good from 2002-3 leaves me disappointed, I wish DPA had this available years ago.

A guy I pass things on to, who has very high-end audio playback gear, has been having ecstatic fits for five months now.

The DPA 406x are fantastic mics.  Perhaps the reason you they come across as too bassy is that your playback system can't handle the bass.  Have you considered upgrading your playback system instead so you may fully enjoy the results from the DPAs?

A comparison with the MMA 6000 i like switching from CSBS to Dpa 4061..Also the Sony TCD-8 recordings I made were a bit bassy ..When i switched to the Sony TCD-D100..Another option is the AD-20  , you will never get that bass out if ya dont let them 4060's eat  go 4 and below...If you want a example what the MMA 6000 with 61's will do download this show ...http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=14809

Source: DPA 4060's > MMA6000 p/s, bass roll-off @ 100 kHz (> SBM-1 line-mod) > Sony D100 (44.1 Khz)
Transfer: Sony D100 > RMR-D100 (Coax Cable) > Audiophile 2096 (digital in) > WAV (through wavelab)

The MMA6000 actually is a big improvement (the regular phantom power sucked big time compared the this new box )  but i still am not satisfied with how louder concerts sound (calm concerts sound really great with this equipment).

Any idea how i can get rid of the basses? Where do i get an attenuator cable you spoke of - any suggestions for a good one? Is this a desirable solution?

Are there better stealth mics than the DPAs anyhow? I don't really like the idea buying a pair of 4061 extra for louder concerts...
