Topic: question about onstage spaced omni's placement...

Hi,

This weekend I would like to attempt to make my first onstage spaced omni recording. I would be using Nakamichi CM-300's with the omni caps. The stage is fairly small. No vocals. My question is, how much is too much spacing between the mics, what is a good distance, and which direction is the best to point the capsules using this technique?

If anyone has any input I would love to hear it! Good idea? Bad idea? Are the card caps a better choice for this? Just trying to try out some different techniques to get a feel for what I like and don't like.

2'-8' spread, get close to the monitors if they have keys or vocals.

and point at stage, but obviouslly being omni it matters little except in the super HF.  And never more than 10 ft, otherwise a "hole" will be heard in the center of the image.  That is my favorite set up, the detail is great.  Also keep them low to the ground, hopefully less than one foot.  I've been experimenting with PZM's which are basiclly omni's right smack on the ground- it keeps phasing down to a theoretical zero.

Thanks for the great info! When you say "point at the stage" should I point the caps toward the amps? The band consists of two bass players and a drummer. Sounds strange I know. But nevertheless a great band.

Again, being omni, pointing at the amps means little, but towards the back of the stage.  Just think of them as perfect spheres of pick-up area.  Not one side of the mic is better than the other.  And yes a Jecklin disc, or somesort of baffle, would help keep the package down to a minimum, ie one stand.  Obviously spaced omni's mean two stands.

Again, great info! I won't have time to make a J-Disc for this show, but will try to make one for future recordings. I am going to use 2 of these desktop mic stands I have.

They are low to the ground (the mic will probably sit at 10 inches tall). They are also unobtrusive, and have nice heavyweighted bases so they won't get knocked over. Sounds like this should work out well. Thanks!

i have a three foot t-bar that make it possible to do spaced omnis on one stand... and it sounds OK, too.
