sennheiser Mkh60 to what?????

i have a sennheiser mkh60. Not because i'm paticularly rich or qualified but just because itwasn't being used and so got passed onto me. I really want to use it, i really want to start recording but i need clarity on what i should rig it with. Now i have been trying to go to minidisc but thats just not working, it can't seem to handle the amount of signal or sound the mic is picking up, so now i'm looking for alternative ways to record. I'm will be using it with cameras most of the time but i also want to use seperatly on locations so i want a mobile rig. I have been recommended the edirol r1 and have looked at various dat devices but i'm not sure what to go for. The edirol r1 doesn't seem to have enough recording time for uncompressed recording and dat seems like it might be dying out!!??
Please i would be so grateful for and suggestions on what rig and why i should go for it. Do i need a preamp as well? i've just got a phamtom power 48volt box at the moment? I don't have loads of money so i'm not looking for it o be the most professional and expensive set up but good enough that i can pass it off as professional! is edirol the best small portable recording device? is there another way??

I'd suggest the Edirol UA5 (modded for stand alone use) for a preamp.  Has phantom power and  not too expensive($200ish??), and has tons of input/output options.  As for what to record to, you could use your minidisc that you have, or go with a creative JB3($150ish).  Cheap and no media to buy.

Unmodded new is around $200 - $250. Modded new from Oade is about $500+. Not sure of the used market, but the don't pop up too often.

You mention that you have one of these. Do you actually have two? If not, you might be happier with making stereo recordings with two mics. My suggestion would be to sell this and pick up a set of mics and a preamp with what you make from the sale. You might get $800-1000 for this if it's in great shape. With that, I'd pick up the audix micros in the yard sale and a UA5 or MP2 and a JB3.

What exactly are the audible symptoms of "just not working"?  Have you tried running the mic into an alternative device (other MD, DAT, PC) to narrow down the problem definitely to the recorder and rule out the mic itself or the cabling?

I only have a single mkh6o which i will be using for outside locations for film projects, but alot of the time i will be using as stand alone and not with camera. So sometiimes i wioll be using it fopr dialog and sometimes for atmospheric sound, situational to layer in background of film.

`i don't want to trade in this mic at the moment. i want to try making it work with this one but yes there is some problems. What it is when i hook upto minidisc is a very hot signal, so picking up alot aloot of sound very hot but also there is sort of white noise surrounding the recording. Now i think this is a recording device problem as when i hooked it up toa mixer there was none of this present, also minidisc is crap.

so far i think i've understood that i need a pre-amp- possibly edirol UA5 and then onto recording device...? could go with JB3? but it only goes upto 16 bit quality is this completely good enough for film or should one really try and get full 22 bit, uncompressed sound? excuse my naivety any blunders, i'm not claiming to be an expert just beginner who needs help?
