folks who use ABC torrent client >>
« on: July 12, 2005, 01:34:40 PM »
so I've been using bit torrando since I started (shadow first) and like it just fine.  last night for the hell of it I decided to try different clients.  got ABC and like the looks of it, like that you can create a torrent with it etc.  however I am having a few issues.  no matter what I do I am firewalled (not an issue with bit torrnado).  I went into my router setttings and opened the ports the same way I have before.  under preferences in ABC the ports are the same.  randomize checked or unchecked, either way I am firewalled.  shows me connected at higher ports than I have opened in the client.

next problem.  when I try to seed a torrent on my harddrive  I open the torrent with abc point it to the directory the files are in but instead of checking the the data and uploading it creates a new folder and starts to d/l.  tried over and over and on different torrents but it does it every time.

i have the same problem with the firewall thing.  only i upload just fine, i just get the warning from the tracker saying it can't connect properly.  i don't get it either.

as for the other problem, have you tried doing it in the directory before the one where the files are.

like say the show you're trying to seed is located at
C:\ > Live > mmj2005-06-21.flac16

instead of selecting the mmj2005-06-21.flac16 directory select the "Live" directory and then when it goes to make the folder, it'll already see that its there and then check the data and start seeding.

again this makes no sence.  just opened the same torrent with tornando and I'm not firewalled.  so it's not the router settings.

I suspect even though ABC indicates you're firewalled, you're not.  Does the tracker indicate you're firewalled (though maybe it gets the firewall flag from the client)?  Are firewalled leechers able to d/l from you?

FWIW, I have no troubles with firewalling using ABC.

the trackers show me as firewalled.  now even if I'm not you know as well as I do that if I'm shown as firewalled and seeding I will get hell for it.

off-topic, but azereus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) has been treating me REAL well.

tendency to stop seeding once its up'd 100% of the original DL file size.

One thing to check:  File | Preferences | Seeding Options and ensure the Upload option for completed files is set to Unlimited upload.

only thing with azereus is the fact that it has a tendency to eat up a lot of memory.

Still veering off topic, but -- while this used to be true, my recent experiences with Azereus over the past few months (after a MAJOR update) have been that it's behaving well and using minimal memory, even with 5-6 simultaneous torrents running.  ymmv of course.

I've been using Azureus for quite awhile now and love it.  Tried all the others out there (ABC, BitTornado (old fav) Mainline, etc.) and I find that Azureus cannot be beaten with running multiple torrents.  The memory usage issues have plagued it because it uses Java (sucks!).  One of thie things that I use with it is the CVS Updater which allows you to download the nightly beta builds.  For the most part sticking with the official releases AND updating to the newest version of Java seems to take care of the memory usage problems.

Give ABC a few minutes. I suspect your XP firewall has yet to process the request for it to be allowed. I use it and its just dandy here. I've tried all the others and constantly come back to ABC. You don't wanna randomize ports. I've noticed some other things along the way as well like Norton AV 2005 doesn't like allowing ABC through. Did you manually assign the ports to use in preferences to the ones opened in your router? Seems like you did? That is strange for sure. Good Luck!
I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
