Move GB from D to C Drive?
« on: July 31, 2005, 01:03:12 AM »
Any way to do this--move GBs from D drive to C drive?  I'm running out of space on my C drive--600MB and my D drive has 8.6GB.  I've looked at the different programs on my C drive and not sure I can do without most/all of them.  Thanx--Bill

Are you trying to move applications or data (video, audio etc.) files?
If you're just trying to move data files then just CUT and PASTE the files using Windows Explorer. If you want to move actual applications (ie. programs like Nero, WinAmp, MS Word etc.) then you will need to go into the Control Panel (Start ---> Control Panel) and then click on the "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall each program one by one. Make sure you have the original installers or origianal CDs available. Once you've uninstalled your applications you can reinstall them again, except this time install them on your D:

Thanx for the response. I'd like to add more available harddrive space on the c drive.  Not move files or apps.  I'm thinking I might want to upgrade the harddrive.

either you move the files, or you replace the hard drive with a bigger one. you cannot add space to the existing c drive.

it may be possible but would likely require you to format the drives as dynamic volumes and do it that way...something i have no experience with and just seems like an unnecessary step when storage is so cheap.  buy a new drive or move files to the unused space on your other drive.

There are ways to do things like that, but when your time is worth more than a big hard drive, I'd say buy something like a 160-300GB drive, Ghost your existing c: drive and image it onto the new one.  That will give you as much free space as you want on c: and room for extra partitions if you so desire.  CompUSA has a WD 160GB drive for $40 after a $60 mail-in rebate among other nice deals.

Partition Magic will do this for you, but at $70 most would consider a new hard drive.  I would.

http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/

I've used it a few times at work and found it to be a scary operation (always back up your files first!!).  Back in the Windows 98 days we would partition C:\ with 2GB and push the remaining space to D:\.  When we upgraded to Windows 2000 we found out the hard way that 2GB was no longer enough space.

Between myself and a few others we've probably used it about 10 times, and it's failed twice requiring a reformat and destroying all trace of data on both partitions.   I'm sure there are other software packages that will do it, although I'm not sure I would trust el cheapo stuff to do something that major...

If you are running Windows XP just right-click on My Compuer and select the 'Manage' option. Then go down to the 'Disk Managment' option.   XP has a built in partitioner/formatter

But you need to be careful as in some operations the XP disk management software will destroy data on the partitions, where Partition Magic usually does not.

This tool allows you to create and delete partitions, but not change their size (without deleting them).

get a new hard drive -- most straightforward way to solve your problem, especially given the VERY small hard drives you currently are using. -- best buy has a 100gb maxtor on sale this week for $50 without any rebates, you can do a lot better ($ per gig) with rebates, etc.

Check out www.salescircular.com for other offers.

That's true, old BIOS and operating systems didn't like large harddrives, but pretty much anything built after 1998 can handle whatever you feel the need to throw at it.
